Wednesday-only "Runs as Required" path from Aylesbury depot to Ilford depot :?

510E 1231 Aylesbury D.M.U. Depot to Ilford E.M.U.D. http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P95072/2014/09/10/advanced

Never knew about such a path! If you'd managed to get the other end of the coach in the photo (where the individual coach number is), the unit number could have been worked out from the coach number :D :P

What a DMU is doing in an EMU depot is beyond me... and if I'd only taken it a fraction of a second later, I'd have got the unit no!

London Overground 172s occasionally head up there too. Obviously Ilford can do some work that other depots can't.

Tyre turning is the normal reason for such moves, does Ilford have a wheel lathe and where do Chiltern have their units tyre turned normally?

165s use the hegenscheidt lathe at IL1, stepboards removed for these moves, the other nearest lathe used to be at Willesden, unsure if its still in use, I recall seeing a 50 having his tyres done there during a visit, was the first time I used a toe bar to move vehicle, I felt very very strong that day.

Ilford lathe can deal with almost anything, its had an A4 visit, countless classes of units and locos, units in the slam days would go on to lathe straight after their job had finished, and the lathe boys would do a unit walk through, I was told some interesting stories when I was at Ilford about what they found

only other lathes nearby will be HE,

Anyone else want to mention the wheel lathe while we're at it?

gets used quite a lot and must be a decent little earner for them at Illford

I assume everyone knows what a wheel lathe is and what it does? I wonder what type they have.

It'd be for the wheel lathe, IIRC SWT used to have its 455's taken there with the help of a GB Shed

AFAIK Wembley has a wheel lathe which is still used but I have not seen anything other than Pendolinos and Scotrail coaches down there recently.

Old Oak Common has a wheel lathe and regularly does the FGW and other's locos and fleets. When I worked in Ready Depot for a while a few years ago, 165s were going to Ilford for Bogie Overhauls - Bombardier/ABB/BREL units and CX overhauls.

Without mentioning the wheel lathe again, but, by the way, it was probably going to the wheel lathe.

Why do I often see FCC DMUs at Ilford, normally 315/7s and 365s? Is there something they can do at Ilford that cannot be done at Hornsey? Or is the answer genuinely "wheel lathe"?

Our units go to Ilford for C4 and C6 work.

Aylesbury has it's own wheel lathe for DMUs.

The Mark 3 coaches are tyre turned at Old Oak Common.

DMUs? FCC? Do mine eyes deceive me?

They wouldn't have looked out of place, near the sea of BREL Mk3-derived stock that operates there... just would've needed a 25kV supply!

It's interesting that classes 165 and 166 are said to have restrictions as to where they can go, because of their width and length, yet they do get around. Former Thames Turbos all had a refurb at Ilford.

And earlier in the thread (and you can see it in the image in the OP) it was mentioned in order to get them to Ilford the stepboards have to come off. IIRC there are similar problems getting some of AGAs DMU fleet (I think 153s) to Ilford if needed.

The building known as A Shop at Ilford does all sorts of work, on both EMUs and DMUs. Just depends what contracts they win. Don't just assume it was solely for tyre turning, if Aylesbury has it's own lathe then probably not.

Definitely going to / from Ilford EMUD for C4 or C6. The DMUs in question have been going there for a while.

I think we 'wheel-y' need to stop with the wheel lathe jokes.

But that was quite funny, everyone repeated themselves!

Quite interesting to see a 165 out in Stratford!

That's what I was trying to remember - The Bombardier contracted C4/C6s. Thanks for reminding me! :)

So Ilford has a wheel lathe. It's not so unusual in that. Yes it attracts some unusual customers, but it's mostly GA's own stock and Freightliner intermodal wagons.

What it also has is a Bombardier facility at A and B Shop that does all manner of overhaul and refurbishment work, including stock outside of GA's area. This is completely independent of the GA maintenance facility. Chiltern Cl165s have been there in the past so why not now.
