At the risk of going off at a bit of a tangent, what would be the difficulty in programming the National Rail ticketing systems to print individual named stations anyway? Given everything nowadays is printed to order, a ticket printed with (say) Sheffield to South Quays (U12*) (and magnetically coded to suit LU requirements) shouldn't be too difficult to arrange.

It might also help avoid any confusion between travel card zones and 'U' destinations?

It would basically be for the reason I mentioned earlier, I suspect: the fact that there can be multiple route options (with corresponding different prices) for the tube portion of a train-tube ticket. That info could be added to the standard railway ticket route field, admittedly, but I expect there simply wouldn't be space where that field is already being used to describe a specific route for the NR potion of the journey.
