The wait to hear whether your interview was successful or not is agonising! Its only been less than a week and I'm already on edge daily lol

Just had my invite email for an e-interview for the future opportunities vacancies for North & East starting August. Anyone else here got the same? Has anyone else had an e-interview before and are they much like a normal interview format with similar questions?

For all you existing signallers that have or do work in signal boxes, if your last train us at say midnight and the next one is at say 6am, what do you do on your night shift?
Read the rule books to refresh our knowledge

A typical weekday night turn at my place is last train circa 0100/0130 passenger wise, freight all night.
You'll usually have at least one line blockage booked - these can be given back to you to allow trains to run (planned maintenance or other work), maybe a T3 (full blown engineering blockage) these are show stoppers once granted the line is closed.
Last week for example we had a T3 on the relief lines all night taking out two of our platforms, leaving only three available.
Once the last passenger had terminated, the main lines where then taken under line blockage for point maintenance work.
With freight running all night you’ll ned work out when the crew need to hand back for the trains to pass. Usually that’s all the attention a LB needs, but with S&T Undertaking measurements and obstruction tests they where on and off the phone all night wanting points moved so any rule book revision was out the window.
Thats generally the theme on nights Sunday to Friday, Saturday night we usually have multiple T3s so when you book on duty and you’ve had half hour to get the lay of the panel you’ll check your Weekly operating notices and supplements to see what work you’ve booked that night.
You’ll then write out your T3 packs, each block has a pack of paperwork which you need to complete. Depending on how many you have on your panel that night, and depending on how many issues you have to deal with that could take an hour to complete.
Once your paperwork is complete you’ll be back to normal working of the panel, about an hour or so before the booked start time the PICOP (Person in charge of possession) will phone to go through the paperwork with you and check train running, and go through any requirements that need further discussion.
As time ticks on and T3 kick off time approaches you’ll start prepping the panel, so you’ll be locking points to the normal position, placing signal collars on protecting signals.
If the T3 extends into another panel or SB you’ll need to discuss with them who is taking the lead (dealing with the PICOP), you'll also come to an understanding when the last train has cleared the blocking limits then contact the PiCOP so they can lay their protection. At this point the line is protected by signals or points so the engineering staff can safely go onto the track and place the stop boards and detonators.
Once the PICOP is ready you’ll grant the T3 and your section of railway is no closed until hand back time.
If your lucky your whole panel will be under T3 or T3 locked so you can’t run any trains - in these circumstances there is pretty much nothing for you to do until it hands back or you book off duty.
Ill leave it to you do wonder what happens in that circumstance.

Can any of the experienced people on here give guidance as to what a Crossing Keeper might do between trains? I believe the station I have applied to (Pantyffynnon - my Skype interview is tomorrow) only has two to four trains a day at the moment and none overnight...

Read books.
Listen to the radio.
Do modelling.
I've even known signaller s do an Open Uni course, written books and done paintings.

On a more serious note, I presume in a quiet single manned box you’d have other chores that need doing?? Cleaning, general maintenance?

Two different LOMs. Interviewed for resident in two different boxes, plus relief. So all my eggs are in one basket now - for good or bad! Yes, in the midlands

In terms of sleeping on duty, I am not naive enough to think it does not happen as I spent many happy hours reading Section Z myself when I was in the grade. However my guys know what the consequences would be if I caught them at it. But you would have to be very dim indeed to get caught by me.
