I need both those 31s (although 31327 is still around, so there's hope)
One of the attractions of our move was that it began locally, so no need to get up at stupid o'clock for a hundred mile drive only to end up near home.

I hope you manage to get 31327 for haulage mate. Is it a runner at the moment or waiting to be restored? The Rylstone Cowboy trip I did in 1990 was local to me as I lived in Swindon then. I moved to Morecambe in 2008 for family reasons but it still felt like stupid o'clock when we got up for that trip. I remember getting on railtours at Swindon late on a Friday evening and some not getting back until the early hours on Sunday.

Good stuff folks, I think I read somewhere that 31327 was leaving Strathspey and moving south. Has anyone else heard that? I need it too.
47403 I agree WCRC maroon is pretty grim, I wish they'd just paint them in original two tone green and have a bit of pride in what they are than try and disguise them as a carriage, same goes for the 37s.

Now that's a way to end a year, on a loco hauled train with required track, good company and just generally good times :)

Just as a point, the inspection saloon didn't do anything other than provide pretty views for Mr Smith et al who were on their xmas jolly. BLS just asked if they could add more stock to run as a charter! Saloon itself doesn't have any controls and the 47 was being driven from the 47 end.

(I was on too) ;)

Interesting.
Thanks for the gen.
I must admit I was under the impression that such propelling moves with punters on board was verboten these days.
Good to know that's not the case :)

December was an extremely busy month for me.
Sadly, very little of that was railway related.
I did manage one final fling in 2016, though, when I enjoyed a few hours out on New Year’s Eve.

The move had to be fairly local as I needed to be back home before 17.00.

The day began at Bradford Interchange when I boarded 155342 for a run to Leeds.
I had decided to go for a few shacks around Sheffield so I made my way to Doncaster using 150148 to Wakefield and 91117, already a member of the thousand mile club, from there after buying my Donny piece.

A South Yorkshire Travelmaster Gold was purchased and my first new station was targeted.
144004 did the deed and took me just shy of thirty miles to Kiveton Park.

DMU 144004_2016.12.31_2_Kiveton Park by Phil Wood, on Flickr

My plan was to get the other three stations between there and Sheffield but something happened en route that made me re-calculate my moves.
Anyone that’s taken the slightest interest in my ramblings will know that I try and ride in each vehicle of a unit.
I needed just one Northern 142 coach to clear all of their Pacers.
This was in 142060.
As 144004 was just about to leave Sheffield, what do you think pulled in alongside?
It was too late to bail off the 144 so I stuck to the original part of my plan and went to Kiveton.
RTT was brought into play and I figured that 142060 had gone to Adwick.
Its next turn would be a Manchester service, so I had one chance to get it before it disappeared over the Pennines.

150114 was the traction from Kiveton Park to Conisbrough.
I had worked out a move that would get me a required shack and also mean I could get to Doncaster in time to cover another unit that I had spotted.
55756 was my required coach and it was roped in without problems.
There's still need a few of their 156 vehicles I need but I’ve now ridden in every other DMU coach in Northern’s fleet.
I feel a few Manchester moves might be on the agenda in 2017 :)
142060 was met at Conisbrough in order to do it to Swinton.

Got you:
DMU 142060_2016.12.31_2_Swinton by Phil Wood, on Flickr

Earlier in the year I had found a few old notebooks in the garage and discovered a discrepancy in my records.
On my database I had a ride on 321902 in 2004 recorded as being in 63154.
One of the notebooks I’d found had that haulage recorded, but in one of the other coaches!
I went with written record, meaning that 321902 went from cleared to uncleared :(
When I was on 150148 in the morning I had seen my most wanted 321 and knew that it was working the 26 minutes past the odd hour services off Doncaster.
I had failed to identify the other unit on these turns so decided to make my way to Doncaster to cover the 14.26 out and meet 321902 coming in.
144007 took me from Swinton to Doncaster and the unknown EMU was pulling in at the same time.
The Pacer had a good few minutes hanging around at Doncaster, which was good as I saw it was cleared 322482 on the 14.26.
A quick look on RTT revealed an alternative move, so it was back onto 144007 and a short trip to Kirk Sandall.

A wait of just a few minutes ended with me getting on 142068 and another, unexpected, scratch.
This was a Doncaster terminator and went into the new platform 0, which was nice.
This fill in move had been quite productive and was so quick that 322482 was still in its platform when 142068 pulled in.
Unfortunately, it’s a lengthy walk from platform 0 to the rest of the station and the 322 had departed by the time I got over there.
No worries, though, as there are two services from Doncaster to Adwick within eight minutes of each other (then none for fifty-two), so it was onto 142094 and my date with another unit clearance.
63154 was boarded at Adwick and another bugbear was put to bed.
I decided to bail at Bentley as I fancied getting a few photos there.

Here's one of them:
DMU 142094_2016.12.31_1_Bentley by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I was there just over half an hour before 321902 appeared once more and I headed home.
This was done to Leeds then 158903 finished the day, not to mention the year, by taking me back to Bradford.
Three new shacks, two of my most wanted coaches and a bonus platform score, not too bad a day out.

I'm so behind the times I didn't know about Doncaster's platform 0 until I saw something from VTEC on Twitter about their new early service. Had to resist pointing out GWR still start way earlier (and finish later...) than they do still! Anyway I need to catch up with new stuff happening up there, I assume it's on the Up side?

A nice end to the year there (seems everyone was out bashing on NYE!) and some nice work there on conquering your local patch. Finally clearing 142060's both coaches must have been quite satisifying too.

Does one assume you're back to your usual Friday London bashes soon?

It is indeed, it's adjacent to the ramp from the shopping centre car park and is linked to the main part of the station by a footbridge.
There's a photo (not mine) here:

It was very satisfying!
I was lucky as well.
144004 left platform 4 at Sheffield at 11.45, 142060 pulled into platform 3 at exactly the same time but was three minutes early.
Had it been on time I would probably not have seen it.

Does one assume you're back to your usual Friday London bashes soon?

We've got our usual Landmark Trust holiday in January so no London trips then but I'm hoping for something down that way in February.

Sounds like a good way to end the year. I'm yet to get in Kiveton Park and the stations up to Worksop myself, looks like a job for when I move down to Yorkshire in September.

Mr 13 - well done with bagging that Pacer vehicle. I agree with you though that the written record is supreme and if there's no written record, there's no record!

Thanks chaps.
I've yet to do a move in 2017 and it may be a few weeks before I have anything to write up.
My cranking muscles are aching to be used but I've got too much on :(
Anyway, happy new year one and all, may all your bashes be productive ones.

Another great read! I also like your photos - there's something quite striking about your Kiveton Park photo with the signalbox that makes it a very appealing shot.

I’ve been extremely busy of late and haven’t managed to get on the forum much in the last month or so.
Unfortunately, I’m currently stricken with a chest infection and can barely walk more than a few yards, therefore I’m off work sick.
The upside of this is that I can sit at a computer and catch up on the forum goings-on.

I can also update my own reports with some witterings about our recent holiday.
As is our tradition Mrs 13 and I had booked a week in January at a Landmark Trust property; this time it was in a house overlooking the structure that gives the town of Ironbridge its name- the world’s very first iron bridge.
Our break began on Friday the 20th and we made our way down from Bradford via Nottingham.
You may think that Nottingham is a strange place to go through on a journey from Yorkshire to Shropshire but we had a very good reason for doing it this way.
My wife’s best friend lives there and she had a hip replacement operation in the City Hospital on Thursday the 19th.
Mrs 13 was desperate to visit her and I was happy to make the detour.
My willingness to go along with this had nothing whatsoever to do with the presence of a tram network (actually, it didn’t, that was just a bonus).

It had been many years since I had visited the NET system.
When I first started seeing my wife she lived in Long Eaton and I was working permanent nights.
My fortnightly rota was Monday to Wednesday nights one week and Monday to Thursday the next.
I would go home after my last shift, get a few hours kip then drive down to Derby, where she worked, to pick her up.
I would then spend the weekend in Long Eaton before heading back to work on Monday.
On my shorter week I would collect her on Thursday and then drop her off at work on Friday morning, giving me several hours in which to amuse myself.
Even though I wasn’t into trams as such, I had never been on that system and it was a nice, cheap (£2.10 for a day ticket back then) way to kill some time.
Over a number of such visits I managed to get all fifteen of the trams then in operation.

Move forward well over a decade and I haven’t returned since those heady courting days.
The network has increased and there are 22 new trams for me to get.
As it was, I actually had 25 on my list.
Not for the first time my poor record keeping had come into play.
Not being that interested in trams back then meant that I had often not noted them down at all.
Last year I had a rummage through my garage and found a few old notebooks which proved a treasure trove of DMU, EMU and HST information.
One of them also contained a couple of NET moves.
These moves recorded trips on all bar three sets, 201, 205 and 207.
That made life a bit easier when I paid my return visit.

On the day itself we drove to Phoenix Park, the same place I used to go after dropping my good lady off at work in the old days.

I had done my research and found that there is a frequent free bus from Wilkinson Street which serves both of Nottingham’s major hospitals, so it was obviously there we went, on my first new NET tram in thirteen years, 226.
We both alighted there and between us we located the appropriate bus stop.
A time of two hours was agreed and off I went tram bashing.
I had in mind a bit of shack scratching and the stop at the top of my list was, as is often the case, the one with the silliest name.
My chariot from Wilkinson Street was one of the original fifteen, but not just any of them – it was one of my wanted three and finally 205 had a recorded move.
I took this through the city centre and left it behind at ng2.
Catchy name, or what?

The moves that I had located from 2004 meant that many of the stops West of the erstwhile Station Street were dud so I decided to get a few more of them out of the way.
This also meant I was the right side of the city for my rendezvous with Mrs 13.

It was outright winner 220 that took me to Bulwell Forest where I took the opportunity to visit the local Tesco for a PNB and to purchase some pop.

220 arrives at ng2:
Nottingham Tram 220_2017.01.20_1_ng2 by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I arrived back just in time to join 220 once again, this time taking it for the short run to Bulwell (which turned out to be nearer to the Tesco I had just been to than Bulwell Forest).

Consecutively numbered 219 was up next, to Butler’s Hill and time was running out.
I only needed one more stop on the Hucknall branch, Moor Bridge, but that would have to wait for another day.
I arrived at our meeting point at Wilkinson Street exactly at the appointed time.
There was, however, no sign of my wife.
I phoned her.
She informed me that she was currently lost inside the hospital and once she found the bus stop it was a good ten minute journey to Wilkinson Street and I might as well do some more trams.
This might seem like good news but I was a bit irked as it was coming up to four o’clock and I wasn’t relishing the drive to Shropshire in Friday rush hour traffic.
Nevertheless, I had to make the best of it.
As mentioned I needed one stop on the Hucknall line but I also needed one on the Phoenix Park branch so I decided to get the first requirement that was heading West and rope in whichever one was appropriate.
I was pretty pleased when I saw it was another of the big three, 207 that arrived heading to Phoenix Park and so it was Cinderhill that got ticked off my list.
If I was pretty pleased with 207 I was overjoyed when the final member of my most wanted trio, 201 followed it four minutes later.
This was heading in the same direction and so I took it for the short leap to Phoenix Park.
When I had done the NET back in its more constricted days one of the platforms at the terminus was only used very occasionally.
As a result I had only done the other one.
201 arrived before 207 had left, meaning both platforms were in use.
I had no problem leaping from the former to the latter and thus getting a new platform in :)
I left 207 at Cinderhill as I wanted a longer run on 201 and all the stops between there and Wilkinson Street were dud.

207 leaves Cinderhill:
Nottingham Tram 207_2017.01.20_2_Cinderhill by Phil Wood, on Flickr

This time my wife arrived at Wilkinson Street just a minute or two after me and it was back to the Phoenix Park and the car on board 225.

All in all a very productive couple of hours, with all three of the original trams that I have failed to previously record, four brand new ones and five new stops.
All because a lady’s hip operation coincided with the start of our holiday.

I was expecting the drive to Ironbridge to be a nightmare and you know what?
It was.
Standing traffic on both the M42 and the M6 due to accidents meant a late arrival at our holiday home.
We were tired but both, in our own ways, very satisfied.
Over the following week trains and, indeed, more trams were to feature but I’ll come to them in due course.

Sounds like a productive time on the NET, and I hope your chest infection clears up soon. Least you're able to make the best of it!

Sorry that you're not feeling too well, I hope you get better soon.

I think the NET is my favourite tram system in the UK, with Mancc in close second. It was a good read there, and congrats on clearing the old trams! Shame about the awful traffic to get to your holiday home, just a stones throw from where I used to live (although only for 9 months)!

Sorry to hear about your chest infection, very nasty. Looking forward to reading more about Ironbridge as I've never been there and it looks very interesting. I've been on the Nottingham trams a couple of times and it's a nice system.

Cheers Lads.
Cowley - Ironbridge is well worth a visit if you like a bit of industrial heritage.
The place is inundated with museums.
Blists Hill Victorian town in particular is highly recommended, it even has a couple of steam locos on display.
There's not that much to the town itself, other than a few nice walks.

This was the view from our living room window, the famous bridge:

Sorry to hear you've been unwell 55013, I've suffered chest infections in the past and they are horrible to deal with so all of my sympathies to you. A speedy recovery is also wished for!

A most excellent little trip to Nottingham, you sure did well in the limited time you had. I look forward to hearing more about your holiday when it's ready to be posted!

What a superb view. I love a bit of industrial heritage, going up to the Severn Valley in May so maybe I'll make the effort to go a bit further and have a look.

Thanks both.

In that photo above the route of the original Severn Valley Railway runs through the trees at the back, it's now a footpath which isn't too unpleasant a walk.

Thanks - I must admit my favourite tram network is the Sheffield one, mainly due to the fabulous gradients that it has.

We spent the first few days of our holiday visiting sites in the local area - the Annual Passport Ticket costs £25 and covers ten local museums (some are closed in the winter but the ticket, as the name implies, last for a year).
We also went a bit further out to visit a place that has long been on my to-do list: Pontecysyllte aqueduct near Wrexham.
For those unfamiliar with this daunting structure it is the longest and highest aqueduct in Britain.
Despite having a life-long fear of heights I really wanted to walk across it.
As this isn’t an aqueduct or canal forum I won’t go on about it other than to say I achieved my goal :)
Mind you, my legs did go a bit wobbly at times!

Tuesday the 24th was the first day that involved trains as we had decided to visit Shrewsbury.
We drove to Telford and caught the first thing to the ancient town.
Luckily for me it was a winner.
I’m not what you might call a big Voyager fan so still need lots of them, getting 221110 on a mandatory move was therefore quite pleasing.
What’s more, unlike most of these things that I travel on, it was fairly empty, which was nice.

DMU 221110_2017.01.24_1_Shrewsbury by Phil Wood, on Flickr

After walking around the town admiring the wonderful architecture we made our way back to the station.
It was still too early to head home and Mrs 13 stated she was happy to have a couple of decent length runs on trains while she read her book.
That’s all the encouragement I need so I looked for required shacks that were a good distance away.
I didn’t need to think about it too much as I had one in mind for my solo outing later in the week, so decided it met all the criteria.
When I started shack scratching one requirement that surprised me was a stop between Wolverhampton and New Street.
It shouldn’t have surprised me really as, back in the days of frequent loco haulage, whatever I was on would be done to either of those two places, if not further.
Another addition to the haulage log, 170508, took us from Shrewsbury to Sandwell & Dudley

DMU 170508_2017.01.24_1_Sandwell & Dudley by Phil Wood, on Flickr

We could have just hung around there for the same 170 back but there’s not a lot to do on the station so it was dud 350243 to Wolverhampton where Mrs 13 could purchase a coffee.
As expected it was 170508 that took us back to Shropshire, although I did manage to sneak one more new station in.
We left the 170 at Oakengates and had a short wait before dud pairing 170510 and 170504 took us less than a mile to Telford.

The following day, Wednesday, was the day we had decided to do our own thing.
It should come as no surprise when I say that I went out on the trains :)

I decided to do a West Midlands Day Ranger.
I have done many of these in the past but decided to do it a bit differently this time.
I got to Telford before the validity of the rover kicked in, so I purchased a single to Wolverhampton in preference to hanging around in sub-zero temperatures.
It was a good job that I did as it was winning 158830, paired with 158839, that gave me a good start to the day.
By the time the train reached Wolves my rover was valid and so I stayed on board until Smethwick Galton Bridge.
I may have mentioned before that I have managed to have at least one loco haulage every calendar month since October 1996.
This has become a bit of a thing with me now and with January rapidly coming to a close I had to do one today if I wanted to keep the run going.
I was aiming for the 10.55 Moor Street – Marylebone but had a bit of time to kill so took 172331 from Galton Bridge to Yardley Wood.
This was followed by 172341 to Spring Road, then 172339 to Hall Green before making my way to Moor Street, once again on 172331.
I decided that if the loco was my last required Chiltern 68, 68015, I would bin my plans and do it to Leamington.
Otherwise it would be Solihull.
Sadly, it was Solihull.
I still enjoyed my January loco, though – it was 68013.

Now it was time to put my plans into action.
A pair of 172s, 172216 and 172220, took me from Solihull to Stourbridge Junction and from there 172342 was my transport to new territory, Worcester Shrub Hill.

DMU 172342_2017.01.25_3_Worcester Shrub Hill by Phil Wood, on Flickr

A short wait there ended with my first ever use of this rover on a Great Western train.
43128 and 43056 powered me all the way to Malvern Link.
Next up was an interesting station, one that has two platforms and looks like a myriad of other such stations up and down the country but is somewhat different in that it is, in effect, two single lines.
Trains to and from Shrub Hill can only use platform 1, whereas platform 2 is the only means of access to the line via Droitwich Spa.
That station is Worcester Foregate Street and I made my way there from Malvern Link on LM’s 150107, thus using platform 2.
Platform 1 was utilised a few minutes later when I boarded 43189 and 43135.
I took the HST to my last winning station of the day, Great Malvern.

HST 43189_2017.01.25_1_Worcester Foregate Street by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I was now heading home and fancied doing it via the Lickey incline.
Dud 170501 provided the traction and I did this from Great Malvern all the way to New Street.
I wasn’t quite finished with the winners yet, though.
158823, leading 158829, worked the last leg of my journey to Telford.
Another good day, with a bit of loco haulage, a couple of winning 158s, two new HST power cars and seven new shacks.
That was it for the holiday in terms of train rides, however our journey home was, like the outward run, via Nottingham.
