You should be pleased with it, it's really good. The report was really good too. :)

Congrats on clearing the Hull to Scarborough line, a line which I need to visit (bar Cottingham, Bridlington & Bempton), the line from Hull towards Selby/Goole is harder with a few extra very limited served shacks ;)

Congratulations 55013 on clearing the 185s, very jealous! You've done well on the shacks too, and I must admit to being surprised at a B&B being open in late November by the seaside! Worth noting it though, is it close to the station? I need all the shacks between Seamer and Hull except for Bridlington. I didn't look around much, as it was changing from a Hull to Bridlington 158 to another 158 forward, but I'm not in a rush to go back. Therefore I don't envy you going there again and again!

All I can remember about Bridlington is that the roads have a few pot-holes, and there is a Tesco located next to the station which has 3 platforms which weren't renumbered when it lost some platforms

And that the station building was quite nice

Those harder shacks will give me something to aim for on future Bridlington trips :)

There's actually quite a few B&Bs open all year.
I think Christmas is quite a busy time as a few people choose to go away for the festive season.
I believe older people with no family often do it as a way of having some company at what can be a difficult time of year if you're on your own.
Also, Bridlington has The Spa which sees quite a few gigs and such like, bringing in punters who see a show and then spend the night rather than doing a late night drive home.
A few years ago we stayed there in November and Status Quo were on.
The place was full to bursting with long haired blokes in denim :)

I guess that makes a lot of sense, they must make a fair bit out of it then. I may have to use this place next year

Sounds like a good day out, though I'm in the same position as you in that I'm highly unlikely to score anything units wise on the line (unless the lone 153 I require turns up) and it is indeed a bit of a slog to try and get shacks in with such long festers.

Hunmanby has a Co-op about 10 minutes walk away for future reference. I still need Beverley, Arram, Filey and Bempton on the Coast Line, so I shall have to pay a visit again soon.

Good read though, no doubt those festers were a little cooler than when I did the shacks in the July heatwave. Remember absolutely roasting on the platform at Hutton Cranswick!

Thanks.
It was cold, but I must admit to preferring cold and dry to warm and sticky any time (cold and wet isn't much fun, though!).

There's always the land trains... ;)

I believe at least one of them is dud

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

December is tricky for decent moves, largely due to some event that takes place near the end of the month and causes huge increases in crowds in the weeks leading up to it.
With this in mind, my monthly day out was always going to be at the start; so it was on Fri the 2nd that I embarked on my last trip of the year to London.

Luckily I had managed to get a cheap seat on the 07.13 from Wakefield, which was nice.
Even luckier, it was low mileage 91114 that was providing the power.
My reservation was in coach C but as there was someone else sitting in the adjacent seat I went through to nearly empty, unreserved, coach D.
I knew there were no further stops so I wasn’t going to deprive anybody of a seat.
I sat on the right until after Doncaster in order to view the GBRF locos parked up South of the station.
Unfortunately it was still dark, so I saw a few dim shapes but nothing identifiable :(
After that I move to the left to see what was on Peterborough.
Happily it was light by this time and I scored 66771 for sight.

My aim for today was more 315s as I think the end could well be nigh for these workhorses.
With money being a bit tighter at this time of year I decided to forego the 395 move that I’ve done on my previous couple of trips to the East End.
It was down to the underground and 21486 to Liverpool Street.
Although I was after the Peps I also fancied bumping up my 317 and 321 numbers so when faced with a choice of dud 315816 or a required 317/7 I plumped for the latter.
317732 became only my fourth member of the subclass for haulage as I took it to Cheshunt.
This was the rear unit with dud 317889 leading.

EMU 317732_2016.12.02_Cheshunt by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I just missed a required 317 on a Statford service so chose to do the next thing back to Liverpool Street, which just happened to be a winning pair of 379s.
The fact that I’ve spent most of my time in that part of the capital chasing the older types meant that I’d only previously had four members of the class, so adding 379011 and 379012 to my list was a bonus.
Once back at the terminus it was over to the TFL platforms as it seems to me that it’s their 315s that are likely to disappear first.
The next service to depart had unrequired 315834 on the rear so I made my way to the front unit.
This was a winner, 315827, so was duly boarded.

Not needing any of the stations on the Shenfield line meant that I decided that winning units was to be my priority.

EMU 315834_2016.12.02_Gidea Park by Phil Wood, on Flickr

Most of the journey to Gidea Park was spent watching for the other sets and trying to compile a full list so I knew what to aim for.
I had partial success with this and had spotted a couple of requirements so a plan started to come together.

My fester at Gidea Park was fairly short as one of the sets that I hadn’t observed turned up with another winner.
315823, which had 315833 on the front, was employed to take me back to Liverpool Street.
I knew that the next couple of departures were dud pairings so I mooched around to see what else was available.
A nice required 321 was spotted on a train that stopped at Romford and just had to be done (my chasing of 315s and 317s has meant that my 321 numbers remain appallingly low).
321422 was the unit in question.

After this it was back to 315s.
By now I knew most of the pairings that were out and knew that six wanted units still remained, two of which were running together.
A series of moves that would get all six for decent runs had been calculated.
After leaving 321422 I watched a couple of dud pairings go before my first target, 315848 arrived, running with 315819.
These took me to Brentwood where I hung about for a bit before doing them back to Romford (thus saving the extra ching in going to Shenfield).
Another winner was running behind these and was taken through to Liverpool Street.
This was 315821, which was paired with 315849.

I had a bit of a wait now as my remaining four units were on consecutive services.
Getting all four for ten miles required a bit of thought but I had managed to work out how to do it.
315855 was first, running with 315822, to Romford.
315830 followed for a short run to Harold Wood.
315830’s companion was 315844.
Next up was the wanted pair, 315820 and 315839.
I sat in the former as far as Brentwood where I left in order to meet back up with 315844 and 315830 which I took as far as Goodmayes in order to get 830 past the ten mile mark.
That target was still achievable for 820 and 839 as well and I achieved it by going in the latter from Goodmayes to Liverpool Street.
With eight new TFL 315s in the bag, leaving me seven to clear; I was happy to flag the ones that had come out for rush hour, avoid the wedge-fest and do something different.

Double winners 317504 and 317505 were different enough for me and I could do them to a new shack.
Broxbourne was my first new station of the day, although I didn’t stay long as it was over the footbridge and on to 317656 for a run to Tottenham Hale.

It was now time to head home, so it was down to shack score number two, Tottenham Hale (LU) for 11045 back to Kings Cross.
Obviously I was hoping for another low mileage 91 home so wasn’t disappointed when I saw it was the same loco as this morning.
Even after today’s 350 mile round trip 91114 remains below a thousand miles, although it’s within touching distance now :)
In summary, my last big move of the year gave me seventeen winners for haulage and a couple of new stations.
Not too shabby, I feel.

Sounded like a good day in London, well done on clearing a few more units for haulage :)

Certainly not a bad way to see out 2016's bashing! You're right on the TfL 315s, only a few more months to go now. I need to get moving and clear the class.

Thanks chaps.

Kite - I was very happy to get 91114 in the book as I hadn't had it in over four years.
I don't know where it's been hiding!

Anyway, that might have been my last "big" trip of the year but I've got one or two other things to get in before December the 31st, starting with this:

Despite having done a move on Friday I found myself out and about on Saturday.
This was an impromptu move brought about when Mrs 13 decided to do a pre-Christmas deep clean of the house.
Although willing to help; my main role in such domestic activities seems to be getting in the way, so I was banished for a few hours.
So where to go and what to do?
It’s December so Manchester was quickly ruled out.
Driving to Meadowhall for a Sheffield tram move was also quickly binned as an idea.
I’ve driven past the Meadowhall exit of the M1 in December before and it’s not a pretty sight, with the queue for the turn off sometimes stretching back a couple of miles.
Definitely a place to avoid at this time of year.

I did want to score something though, so just piddling about West Yorkshire killing time wasn’t an option.

I made my way to Bradford Interchange and started the day on a full and standing 150218, which I took to Leeds.
I had decided to do something that would get a few shacks in, so continued by making my way to Wakefield Westgate on 144016.
An anytime day return to Doncaster was purchased – the anytime is £9.70 and off-peak is £15.60!
It was a spin on low mileage 91132 next, the twenty miles from Westgate to Doncaster not in the same league as a London trip but it all adds up.

Once at Doncaster things started to go a bit pear shaped.
Several trains were cancelled, all ones that were due to go to or via Sheffield.
These services called at my required stations but would also be full of Meadowhall punters, so fewer services would mean more wedging.
Bah.

After purchasing my South Yorkshire Travelmaster Gold I observed a charter arriving
This had double winners for sight 68023 on the front and 68016 on the rear.

My first winning shack of the day was Thorne South and I made my way there on nicely empty 142028, the same unit that I had used to score Reddish South and Denton earlier in the year.

Windmills of your mind:
DMU 142028_2016.12.03_2_Thorne South by Phil Wood, on Flickr

Unfortunately the unit that I got next, 144008, was as far from empty as it could get.
Nevertheless I stuck it out for over three quarters of an hour as I made my way to shack score number two, Rotherham Central.

As mentioned, I knew that all services stopping at Meadowhall would be full so my plan now was to avoid suffering any for too long.

142089 was utilised to take me to Conisbrough.

It's a good job I like Nodding Donkeys :)
DMU 142089_2016.12.03_2_Conisbrough by Phil Wood, on Flickr

Next up was another full and standing service, formed of 142028 (again), but only for the short run to Mexborough

Although I don’t need any 142s there are a few that still have some targets attached.
Most of these dwell in Cardiff but two Northern ones occupied my “slightly irritating” pile.
142060 has a required coach (now the only none 156 Northern DMU coach that I require for a ride in) and 142041 had less than ten miles on the clock.
I say “had” because it was 142041 that pulled into Mexborough to take me to my next new station.
That was nice.
The ten mile barrier was well and truly smashed as I took it through to its destination, Adwick.

There was now just one more station on the Leeds to Doncaster line still required and I did this on the next train between the two places.
Sadly it wasn’t a four car EMU as usual, though.
It was a wedged 158845.
Happily the run from Adwick to Bentley isn’t the longest in the world.

142041 was picked up again on its return and I took it to Doncaster as my day was coming to a close.

After having the same low mileage 91 both ways yesterday I was equally pleased to have the feat repeated today as it was 91132 that took me to Leeds, now 50 miles closer to the magic thousand than it was when I left the house.

All that remained was 142090 from Leeds to Interchange and I was back in the house just after 16.00.
Six new South Yorkshire shacks roped in on a short bonus day out, I’m happy with that.

Not a bad haul for an unexpected trip, a number of shacks I haven't done myself there. Quite, I believe that all of them are required!

I'm also doing the Ten Mile Club, but only on 172/2, 172/3s, 323s and 350s. One 172/2 is only on 50 chains, which I really hope to increase in 2017. Super Dudding all of them is quite a big job, worse than expected, but getting there slowly.

Hopefully Mrs 13 does another deep clean just after Christmas ;)

After getting West Yorkshire cleared this year the Southern part of the county will definitely be seeing more of my shack scoring attention in 2017 :)

As for the mileage thing, I've been recording it for a quite a while but it became more of a thing when I started chasing EMUs; because trying to clear them for all coaches is an impossible task and I like to have targets to aim for.
Also, I've always tried to get a decent run on things.
I much prefer that to short hops, mainly because I can't be bothered jumping on and off throughout the day.
I think I'd rather have 75% of an EMU class for 10 miles than have 100% at 0.5 miles.

That's fair enough, I only started really doing any Ten Mile Club stuff after Keith mentioned it on his trip reports. My bigger goal is to clear all LM 170s for 500 miles, some of which aren't far off. Quite, one of them is nearly at 1,000 now!

I have too many needs in the South still, and way too many north of Yorkshire for my liking. Ooh, that does give me an idea for my birthday bash, one I had completely forgotten about...

Just catching up with your latest antics and that capital caper sounded productive with loads of PEP-derived stock falling by the wayside. Well done!

And good to hear that you made use of the impromptu spare time generated by Mrs 13's quest for cleanliness. As for 91114, I have encountered more times on the East Coast than I would have liked unlike a certain 91 which has yet to grace The Haulage Book!

Another trip report I'm trying to catch up with, as usual some great reads there Phil. Plenty winners in the capital and plenty new shacks, that Mrs 13 is good to you or maybe she just wants you out the way:D

Envious of the cat moves, I must do the evening set out of Marley one day. Cracking pics again, not that I'm an expert on these things but the one of 185114 is a corker, not that I'm a 185 fanatic but with the winter foliage, its just a nice back drop for the said unit. Talking of 185s, congrats on clearing them for haulage too.

Thanks for your kind words folks.
As usual, at this, "the most wonderful time of the year", I've been very busy of late and have a bit of catching up to do with plenty of reports to read.

Before that, though, here's what will probably be my last move of the year.
I've mentioned previously that my mates and I have an end of year move that has become a bit of a tradition.
Over the last few years this has involved driving to Solihull and covering both of the Saturday loco hauled turns with a meal in between.
This year, however, we plumped for something a bit different - a BLS tour.

Probably the biggest bit of rare track in our local area and a line that we have all wanted to do for many years - the Rylstone branch.

Luckily for us a small tour, starting from Skipton, was arranged for Sunday December the 11th.
My day began with a short drive to Shipley were I met up with 45135.
Our mate was already on board 333014 when it arrived as he had come from Huddersfield.
Naturally, the EMU was taken to Skipton which we reached in plenty of time to get a few shots of the train we were going to do.
This was formed of 47746, four coaches and an inspection saloon, number 999506.

47746_2016.12.11_1_Skipton by Phil Wood, on Flickr

Inspection Saloon 999506_2016.12.11_2_Skipton by Phil Wood, on Flickr

We had all been a bit perplexed when we had seen that only one loco was booked to work the tour as we knew a couple of reversals would be involved, now it all became clear.

With the train being controlled from 999506, 47746 pushed us out of the station and to the reversal point at "Skipton Down Shipley Slow", which is what it's apparently called.
After that it was down the 9 mile branch to Rylstone quarry.
This was my first run on 47746 since I had it from Crewe to Rhyl in 2003.

It was an enjoyable run; with mince pies, Christmas crackers and chocolates being distributed by the stewards.

We did think that 999506 might lead on the way back, but it didn't.

47746 running round:
47746_2016.12.11_4_Rylstone by Phil Wood, on Flickr

This meant a further run round at the same point 25 chains North of the station.
That was it, short but sweet.
There was another run up the branch, which was booked to take in a different siding within the complex, but we were done for the day.
After that it was the obligatory Weatherspoon's mixed grill before doing 333014 once more.
I bailed at Shipley and headed home.

In conclusion, no winning haulages and no new stations but we did manage to get our most wanted line done, a fine way to end the year.

Thanks - it's a line that doesn't see much none-freight traffic, that's for sure.
I've had a look online (it was just a brief search so is far from definitive) and the most recent tour down the branch that I found was in 2010.

I always wondered where Rylstone was (obviously not too much though or I'd have looked it up :)). I remember reading about a tour years ago called the 'Rylstone Cowboy' that went there.
Really unusual to see an inspection saloon used in a tour and quite unusual to see a loco run round these days.
Those BLS trips look like quite a relaxing thing to do.

The other Rylstone Cowboy was on the 27th of October 1990. I got on it at Swindon with 47974 on the front taking us to Bristol TM. Later in the day we had 31327 and 31294 up the Rylstone branch. 25322 Tamworth Castle was on the other end and took us to Morecambe old station before a trip along the Heysham branch was done.

Oh Phil, how jealous am I of the 47 move, agree strange to use that propelling unit. Certainly a bit of a novelty. Great read.

I'm still not convinced about the West Coast livery mind, however, whatever pyjamas a 47 wears, it still sounds awesome. Great read by the way

I'm not a one for lines but you've sparked a few memories, of times when out chasing stuff. I remember being stuck on the slow both ways by Tyne Yard to allow zings past, Ive also been stuck in the loop just outside Durham, when the Glasgow Scarborough ran into difficulties again. 37114 had already had one failure and been rescued by a 26, which my mates and I were on from Berwick, the 26 & 37 were replaced by an NB 47 from Newcastle. On we went, only to fail south of Ouston Junction, a 31, cant remember which, was scrambled from Tyne Yard and it pushed us into the loop to wait for another NB 47 to rescue us and continue onto Scarborough. We bailed at Durham. Another summer Saturday, think it may have been the afternoon Yarmouth, it was mega late and we got routed via the back lines at Tyne Yard, past the stabling point, past the foremans office and out continuing on the slow to Low Fell junction and back onto the mainline through Gateshead shed and over the High Level into Newcstle.

Another with 47423 on an Evening trans penning turn, just after King Edward Bridge Junction, with said 47 sputtering over the King Eddie Bridge, we got diverted into the slow all the way to Ouston Junction, where 47423 was declared a failure, rescue came in the form of 56115, which we took Darlo.

All those on mainline passenger trains too. Granted all were in the mid 80s. Nowadays many of them would've just been caped en route.

Sorry to hijack your thread Phil.

It is a very nice part of the world. I've done a lot of walking in the Pennines and the views can be breathtaking.

The tour last weekend was also called The Rylstone Cowboy - they must be running out of names :)

I need both those 31s (although 31327 is still around, so there's hope)
One of the attractions of our move was that it began locally, so no need to get up at stupid o'clock for a hundred mile drive only to end up near home!

Hijack away!
Tales like those are great reading.
The Glasgow - Scarborough one was brilliant.
The grid into Darlington reminds me of a similar thing that happened to me.
I was doing my usual E33/V67 move, on 47807, when the Northbound service came to a halt about fourteen miles North of Darlington.
Nothing wrong with the loco - the wires had come down in front of us.
The guard announced that a loco was coming from Thornaby to drag us back.
I had my head out of the window and eventually saw a coal sector 56 slowly pull up to the rear of the train.
The grid towed us back to Darlington and I legged it down the platform to ID it.
It was dud!
56104.
Bah.
47807 then ran round and picked up its booked V67 path.
Despite the fact the 56 was unrequired it's still a good memory.
