A superb read there! You were very lucky with the 483s too! It must have been a mega disappointment on your first trip to miss 33027 (which has one of my favourite crompton names) though. You weren't really missing out on much with the lower mileage on 60066 and 66768 - you couldn't really hear the donut and the blue death is... well... A blue death! It's 47712 you missed out on!

I'm looking at ways to get one in as well, I really want to get my last two 313/2s, both of which (313206 and 313215) I actually saw working last week but always when I/we were returning to base and had no chance of getting them.

I've just realised that I actually scored 47712 twenty seven years ago yesterday, on the 10th of April 1989, doing it Haymarket - Waverley - Queen Street.
How time flies.

I've just realised that I actually scored 47712 twenty seven years ago yesterday, on the 10th of April 1989, doing it Haymarket - Waverley - Queen Street.
How time flies.

Just taken a look at my records and 47712 was new back in 1978 (as 47505) on 13 July 1978 from Gloucester to Cheltenham. I had it again the following year from St Pancras to Nottingham. Then gave it a wide berth when it was shoving only to have two runs in 1998 when a Fragonset loco before a final jolly in 2000.

A superb read as always, Your memories of 33027 remind me that it was one of the few Cromptons I've seen in Norfolk as it turned up at Crown point Open day in 1983. Enjoyed the piccies of the NVR as well - 47712 was superb indeed as was 47192.

For red pen reasons I only had it for a Ferry Meadows leap, which was fairly quiet, I was on the Mk1 rake and the first time I really heard it was after I got off the train. The old girl looked very smart in its Scotrail colours though.

More great reads and pics indeed 55013, seems like the hols were relaxing and Mrs 13, has the patience of a Saint, letting you play trains too. Christ my ex used to moan and groan, especially, if I saw a 66 coming towards Pelaw metro, when we'd be waiting for the metro into town, she'd say, oh man, it's only a train, it'll come past later, it better hurry up or Im just gonna get on the next metro and leave you here, she never did but she never did get the concept of a man, being interested in trains. Anyway, belated Happy Anniversary to you both.

Lot of folk have said 47192 and 47712 were on fine form.
Like you I enjoyed 47712 on the push pull workings, Im also old enough to remember it in large logo livery too, aint seen any pics of it recently, has it got back the Lady Diana Spencer nameplates or not?

Mrs 13 is very accommodating, but then so am I, we both believe in give and take and as long as we do plenty of stuff together that we both enjoy then we get time out to do our own thing.
When we travel together specifically for me to get a particular train in, she's happy as long as she's got a book to read whilst I'm flapping
I didn't see 47712, but I'm sure 45135 told me that it currently lacks a name.

This weekend saw a very nice event at the ELR that just had to be done – their Small Engines gala.
Shunters, type 1s and small steam engines ruled the roost and there were a couple of tasty gronks that lured 45135 and I over the Pennines.

He picked me up at 08.45 and the drive over was reasonable, with us landing at the car park adjacent to Bury Bolton Street well before our first target was due to leave.

This was the real biggy of the day, 08721, sadly no longer in its “Express Parcels” livery that I’d seen it carrying on so many occasions when I hurtled past Longsight depot.
"Longsight TMD", as it's now named, was enjoyed to Heywood.

My only real bugbear with this event was what happened on the return.
The rake was made up of three coaches, one of which was a half brake, and was pretty full leaving Bury, not surprising since they had rostered a loco that many people wanted.
So, it pleased no one when one entire coach was reserved for a party from the Wirral Transport Users Association from Heywood back to Bury.
The gala customers weren’t happy at having to cram into the remaining one and a half vehicles and the old folk (the WTUA seems to be made up entirely of people over 70) weren’t exactly overjoyed with the squeeze either.
I can think of several ways this could have been avoided.
Anyway, it was 73001 that worked back to Bury and the OAPS left the train to continue their run to Rawtenstall on a train that had a bit more space.

The Heywood line was where we spent most of the day and our next run was no exception, with us taking class 14 D9537, which apparently failed later on, down in anticipation of another winner on the return.

09024 and Manchester Ship Canal shunter 4002 powered out of Heywood, but not very far.
The train ground to a halt and it quickly became apparent something was amiss.
Eventually we started moving but the word had spread that the MSC loco had called it a day.
Meaning that it was the 09 on its own the rest of the way to Bury.
This train was due to work to Ramsbottom, but it was terminated at Bury due to the delay.
09024 dragged the errant 4002 off to the naughty siding whilst we contemplated our next move.
We had intended to stay on board to Rammy and catch the 14 that was behind it, taking that to Rawtenstall and back.
This service had already left by the time we reached Bury, so we had no choice but to do a kettle up to meet D9531 coming back.
I’m not a steam man, so don’t know anything about the loco we had, other than it was LMS 12322.

Probably new, but I’m not adding it to my yearly total.
That was our only steam haulage of the day.
D9531 took us back to Bury and it was Heywood runs from now on in.

Both of today’s winners were up next, with 09024 and 08721 working in tandem to the southern terminus of the line, 73001 once again taking us back.

Our last round trip was worked by 08721 on its own from Bury to Heywood and for the third and final time 73001 back to Bury and the car.

The journey home wasn’t the best we’ve ever had due to snow!
Pretty treacherous conditions on the M62 around Huddersfield made for a slow journey.
Luckily 45135 was driving, not me
So, a jolly good day out, with another couple of winners to add to my total for the year.

I clocked this event the other day, but the Bluebell was a far bigger pull than boring shunters. My view of shunters was confirmed again today, with a less than exciting run with 09018.

Aside from the rancid weather on the way home, it looks like it was a good time still. Well, barring the failure of that MSC shunter messing things up of course.

The run with the 2 kettles from Bury to Heywood (Beatrice on the front and Gothenburg on the back, both powering), was probably the fastest run I had on the ELR on Saturday! 1 winner for me (the LO 08) so a decent day out, I did spot Messrs 45135/55013 on one trip as I was preparing for a quick dash at Bury. I went home via the M65 - no slow journey, but changing lanes to overtake made me realise the sleet/slush was a bit deeper than I thought...

Shunters are superb, gronks are great, rods are, er, really good.

Seriously though, the Bluebell looked good but would have meant a very long day, or even an overnight, whereas the ELR is on our doorstep.
Two winners at Bury against two at the Bluebell meant it was no contest for us.

Yeah, I'm afraid steam just doesn't grab me, although I do like the smell of a steam loco!

I didn't spot you this time, although it was a bit busy and we do tend to skulk about, trying to avoid the busier places.
The M62 wasn't too bad apart from the dip just before Huddersfield, the ambient temperature there must be very low as the snow had compacted and frozen, which meant everyone taking it very careful, leading to a bit of a tailback.

I've been very busy recently and not had the chance to do a railway move.
So I leapt at the opportunity of a short notice trip yesterday whilst Mrs 13 had a day out spending our money
Sadly I couldn't find our camera, not for the first time, so no pictures to break up the waffle.
It wasn't a particularly spectacular move but it had the desired effect of keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

I drove to Brighouse and took 144014 to Huddersfield before heading over to Manchester on dud 185145.
I needed seven 185s and let a couple go in the hope of a new one arriving (there were three due in the space of twenty minutes, so not too painful a fester).
Unlike last time I was in Manchester I wanted to concentrate on mainline stuff.
Nevertheless I headed down to the Metrolink ticket machine to buy a Tram & Train ranger as this is cheaper than a Wayfarer and covers all the trams, unlike the Rail Ranger which only covers the city centre section.
First up was a pair of 156ers, 156425 leading 156489.
Both were dud of course, but I needed one coach from each and so it was 52489 to Manchester Airport and, after seeing nothing of interest there, 52425 back to Piccadilly.
The airport line was to be the staple of my day.

My first winner of the day was 319369.
No prizes for guessing I did this to the airport.
I planned at this time to make use of the tram validity of my ticket but as I strolled round I espied a required 185 and so the tram idea was put on hold.
185142 was sampled backed to Piccadilly before dud 319380 took me for my third, but not final, visit to the airport.
As usual I wanted to add some new shacks to my day and so I took the opportunity of doing dud 319362, which was on the Picc shuttle, out to Heald Green.
A short wait finished with me boarding 323236 in coach 65036, making it the first 323 that I've completely cleared.
My planned tram trip was next, with 3084 taking me from Manchester Airport Metrolink to Peel Hall for 3030 back.
I had taken this opportunity to do a tram leap as I knew what would be on the next Liverpool and I wanted it
Sure enough 319377 was waiting in when I arrived and was duly captured to, naturally, Piccadilly.
I had a look around to see if any of my Northern units with required coaches were kicking about.
None were, so it was onto 319362 for the second time and once again I was at the airport when I disembarked.
Now, I need so little main line stuff around Manchester and a day over there usually gets me no more than three or four winners, so the run I had from here on in was staggering.
Winner 185116 to Picc for winner 185103 back, then winner 350403, coupled to dud 350410 (although I'd only previously had that Waverley to Haymarket) before heading back over the Pennines on winner 185148.
155347 took me back to Brighouse from Huddersfield and a very enjoyable day out was over with.
I can't remember the last time I scored four 185s in a day and now I only need three (102/106/112).
Add in a couple of 319s, a 350 and two trams and it was a most productive bonus day out

Considering you only needed 7 185s, to score 4 of them in one day is a exceptional performance! I too need 185112, although I have a feeling you'll get it way before me. 144014 is also required here, hmm maybe I should get north again on my next bash...

Out of the dud units from your day out, I still need 155347 (just this and 155343 needed to clear the class), 156425, 156489 and 185145 for haulage. I need two of your required 185s (185102 and 185112) as well, hopefully it won't be too long before we can tick them off our lists!

I concur with the above, certainly done well there, its nice when stuff drops like that. Gives you that, well I'm an half glad I done that today, feeling. Did Mrs 13, get rewarded with flowers.

A mighty fine read there. Well done on hammering those Transpennine needs. Four from seven 185s is definitely good going. Let's hope that the Railway Gods are having an equally good day when it comes to my rounding up my last remaining 185s.

With all due respect to those folk who are now bagging 319/3s up north, I was quite happy to see them leave my neck of the woods - I'd well and truly got fed up of them as I'd had most of them when they were brand new as 3191xx and then suffered them constantly thereafter, particularly when they had their first class seating ripped out and became 3193xx units.

I'm not sure whether The Sticks could cope with the 700s. There would need to be a lot of platform extension work first. And I'm not sure whether Hereford will see any 3rd rail or OCLE in the near future. But keep taking the 319s as after 25 years, I am well and truly fed up with them.

We don't need wires or 3rd rail, just bang a 68 on each end (or a pair, whichever it needs) and we'll be fine. Modify the end coaches in each 8 coach set to have openable windows and we'll be well away. Rugby and frothball crowds will never have an issue again on ATW

Just mind the gas torches on East Croydon, ready for the 442s, we don't want them!
