Does seem a problem with these "reliable" MTUs. Problem with modern engines is that they run at higher temperatures and under higher stresses, so it doesn't take a lot to make them fail spectacularly, with fires being not uncommon (bus and train engine fires both seem more common these days than in the past). Valentas were almost as bad, hence why they are being replaced now wheras many older engines are still going strong (EEs in the 37s and 31s, Sulzers in the 47s etc).
High engine temperatures are partly as a result of the lower emission requirements, whilst keeping or improving on the performance and fuel economy
With higher engine temperatures come other associated problems
The exhaust gas temperatures will be higher too, so expect more blown turbos until someone resolves that one (again)
