Good photo's! I was surprised to see they didn't get driven up here to Scotland, but came in amongst freight wagons.

im curious...
why would you think the units would or could have been driven up on their own rather than dragged...?

the class probably isnt certificed/passed for use along the full length of the WCML, and they would need dragged from dollands moor since the 380s are not 3rd rail compatible...

there are very few drivers outside of ScotRail, that are trained on the units
those that are passed (as far as i know) are ScotRail and GBRf
and since DBSs only involvement (to my knowledge) is delivery to glasgow from siemens in austria/germany (i forget which one:oops:) they would have no need to have class 380 trained drivers

AIUI the units couldnt be used on their own after shipping from siemens, but before they are commisioned in glasgow

plus apart from the class 170s, the only other post privitisation units delivered to scotland were also IIRC dragged up from the factory...

All recent new units that have been built abroad have been dragged to somewhere in the UK for commissioning - I have seen (and have photographs of in some cases) 333s, 444s, 450s, 350/1 and /2, 360s, 185s and Meridians in transit. Can only kick myself now that I didn't take more photos of all these due to suffering, for various reasons, a serious lack of interest in UK matters for a few years.

The units don't get commissioned until they arrive at Polmadie, which takes several weeks. It obviously makes more sense to do this in Scotland so that they've got all the Siemens crew based in a single location, rather than having one team in England for commissioning and another in Scotland for trouble shooting and testing.

The freight wagons in the train are there to provide brake force - the loco on the front can't control the brakes on the 380s, so the wagons basically help stop the train. They also act as translator vehicles to allow the 380s to couple up in a train with a loco on the front, as the loco and 380s have different types of couplers and can't couple direct.

Thanks, although I don't think I've ever heard either the 334's or the Pendo's constantly making the noise. Maybe they're just quieter!
Different technology
The Class 323 EMUs were the first to have this but solely for transmission purposes
The latest Siemens EMUs have taken this one stage further integrating regenerative braking

Search Youtube for "noisy Class 323" and you will see how much noise the electrical systems make

I now reckon it will be September when I next go to Glasgow and Edinburgh. I am encouraged that more class 380s are now in service. Apparently a few class 322s have already left for Northern Rail.

lol there is 5 in total, so how many is a 'few' since we are exactly talking about a lot in the first place

A few is what I'd describe the whole fleet as...

And btw I doubt they actually have

I do believe two (which tends to constitute a few) have gone for some preparation work at Kilmarnock(?) before moving to Northern

ScotRail is still paying for them and is also paying for the minor work as specified by Northern Rail (via RoSCo) to reinstate some equipment previously removed and placed into storage, but remain available to ScotRail in the event of any further issue with Class 380 units (but now unlikely)
All five units should be removed from passenger service with ScotRail on 26 June
The first unit should be with Northern Rail towards the middle of July, all five by the end of August

What equipment is that?

They should leave them alone they can handle 8 bikes. The only mod i would do would be to put an intermediate door control panel in.
Northern Rail (via the RoSCo) have specified seating over bike racks, for the routes they are intended for

Installing door control panels would be quite involved; time consuming, costs to be incurred
Do the Class 321 units have these?

322485 should be going to Sprinburn for C4 overhaul at the end of June. 322481 was due to go in September. Whether this will now happen, or be carried out at Heaton or Neville Hill instead.

322482/483/484 have all had C4 overhauls recently.

Last two 380s expected at Frethun on Fri/Sat 1/2 July 2011. Then Dollands Moor by Saturday Night (usually scrapes in just before midnight). Then on the usual 7X80 on Monday-sh midday to Scotland. My main reason for believing it this time is ONLY because there have been a number of postponements of this pair already so its getting more likely !.

It will all be over soon folks - do you realise it all started at Dollands Moor on 25 August 2010. Nearly a year for 38 units.

A small number of /4 do, unsure about /3. The panels on /4 were disabled under Silverlink as they were non-standard/

I believe these are the last two
The last two Class 380 or Class 322?
Indeed it will be the last two Class 380, still waiting on 7 entering public service, but now enough units to meet the minimum PVR
By the end of this week that should be down to 5 outstanding units to enter public use

Sorry, my post was a bit vague, yes I did mean the last two 380s!

Two 380s spotted at Polmadie from the new vantage point that is the M74 this evening
It's not that easy to see the Class 380 units from the M74
However, a Class 390 unit was clearly visible as it entered the carriage shed

Corkerhill is also easy to see from the M77, but more so in winter when the tree foliage is reduced
This will not be such an issue on the M74 at Polmadie, as there are no tree
Further along to the west the view of the mainline is currently unrestricted (where the BOC depot used to be) at the Junction 1B onramp
