 I was thinking of a odd working .

If they are going to use one on the line they would send a couple out in the event of a unit failing, unfortunately it may not happen for a long time.

I just hope that once the teething problems are out of the way the 380's can hit the ground running. If they experience adverse reactions to the cold then it is going to be an extremely bad headache for ScotRail.

So will the class 380 units operate Glasgow Central to North Berwick and vice versa services then? and if a class 314 ever came back to the Argyle line would they appear on the Larkhall line?

Yes, they will work Glasgow to North Berwick services and vice versa, from around March next year. Don't know much about 314's on the Argyle line, but i'd be pretty surprised if one ventured down there nowadays.

...Did you not read my post properly? I said you have a better chance of seeing a 314 on the Argyle Line than you do a 380.

There is no chance now, these units will only be permitted on Cathcart or Inverclyde from December
Argyle Line becomes 318, 320, and 334 only

It must be 10 years since a 314 was on the Argyle line. The 314s are suited to the Cathcart Circle and Newton . Even the Neilston would be better of with 318s or 334s. I remember a 318 diagram on the Neilston at somepoint .

And what are Network Rail doing that mean that 314s will no longer be able to work south of Paisley Gilmour Street or through Glasgow Central Low Level (etc; etc; )?

Ewan

Didnt 314s work the Ayr route last winter ?

Class 156
There was talk on here of them doing Largs
That is correct, the contigency (if there are no Class 380 units at the commencement of the next timetable) are for Class 156 units to operate the entire Glasgow - Largs service, no Ardrossan service at all, but one unit (either EMU or DMU) will operate a shuttle between Kilwinning and Ardrossan SB
This releases the required number of Class 334 units to operate the basic Helensburgh - Edinburgh service
However, there would not be enough units to operate the Milngavie - Edinburgh service, and so only operates as far as Airdrie
The contigency to retain the Class 158 units has now been dropped, this cascade releases the Class 156 units

Seeing as the class 380 units have started to arrive, do you think the planned timetable and cascades will go ahead? and will class 320 units be likely to start operating on the Argyle Line on the first day of the new timetable i.e Sunday 12 th December?

Haven't you asked this already and before?

The timetables and cascade are now suspended, primarily due to the delivery of the Class 380 units being about 10 weeks behind schedule
There are two contigency plans, to be used by each project
The first contingency allows the cascade of Class 334 units to the North Clyde routes
The second contingency allows a basic service between Helensburgh and Edinburgh

Class 320 units will be cascaded to the Argyle Line, this has been confirmed to you previously
These will later be joined by additional Class 318 units, as more Class 380 units are accepted between December 2010 and May 2011

In other words all class 320 units will be cascaded then?

No only some, some will remain on North Clyde routes to operate the Balloch-Airdrie service.
The plan however as Rail Britain commented is to have a mixture of 320 and 318s operating the Argyle Line services, with ONLY 334s on the Edinburgh-Helensburgh/Milngavie.

HOWEVER until enough 380s can be introduced into regular passenger service then the major cascade is slimming down until the 380s can be put in place.

Is there a date of when the 380s are going to start passenger services ? I guess it changes all the time. Really unclear at the moment.

Unclear one was due to be handed over officially to ScotRail on Friday I think, however no timetable for december or anything yet so its very much wait and see how many we can get ready and trained drivers...

The official entry date has not changed, Monday 13 December

It had been hoped to have some in passenger use earlier
The same as when the Ayrline was nearing completion some Class 318 units entered passenger service early

The main issue now is will there be enough units so that the required cascade of Class 334 units can operate the Helensburgh - Edinburgh and Milngavie - Edinburgh services
Clearly this will not be the case, the project being 10 weeks behind gives some idea as to the number of units not available
However, some attempt is now being made to clawback some of that delay through additional driver training of the eight units that have now been approved for such use, and as things progress now two further units each week

There should be two units ready for passenger use on Monday 15 November, but it is likely to be for "officials" only
Therefore watch with interest on Tuesday 16 November

The next issue is receiving enough 3 car units so that they can enter service between Glasgow and Ayr
If there are not enough, then the 4 car units will simply enter service on the Inverclyde routes only
However, that also presents its own issues as not all the stations are ready!

I'm sure a 4 car will comfortably fit on all stations to Gourock, not sure of Whinhill on way to the bay, but there should be no problem operationally if SDO is fitted. Any issues with it though ?

There are no know issues with SDO, all tested and operational between Glasgow - Ayr / Largs /Ardrossan / Gourock / Wemyss Bay

As previous
Glasgow - Ayr can cope with pairs of 4 car units in passenger service, but it means using specific platforms at Ayr, which is not practical for "all day" use
Normally the services will be 4 or 7 car
There will be some services which will be 8 car, these will join / split or pass right through Ayr to/from the depot only
An example is the 17:1x Glasgow - Ayr, which will be 8 car from Glasgow, but will return to Glasgow as a 4 car, the other 4 car going to the depot

I wouldn't bother.

Yet the original plan was to start introducing four-car units to Ayr before the whole introduction went pear shaped. Why can they no longer introduce four-car units on the Ayr line?

I don't know what they're planning on doing just now, but the original plan was a maximum of seven-car units in passenger service from December. That could well change with the current delays in introducing them, but once the full fleet is introduced, there won't be any eight-car trains diagrammed. And the 17:13 Glasgow - Ayr is a pair of units and they won't split on arrival either.

All stations on the Inverclyde and Ayrshire lines will be long enough for at least five-cars.
