Forgive me if this question has been asked before but surely it would be in the best interests of the ROSCO to have the 379s stored adjacent to an electrified line and to take them out for a run every 2-3 weeks to keep everything in working order. Or is this just a pause before they are towed from Worksop to a scrapyard?

I can’t see them scrapping the Class 379s especially if they’re going to the effort of moving them to said unnelectrified sidings rather than sending them straight to the scrapyard.

I can tell you that 379028, 018, 015, 013, 001, 010 and 025 were at Harwich yesterday. There were 2 or 3 more but no way to identify them. 025 was “pan up” with reds at the rear.

When I passed through Ilford on 8th April, there were 4 lots of 8 car 379s stabled in the electrified sidings London side of Ilford (they have a name, but I don't know it) but couldn't get any numbers. Regarding the future of these units, originally it was reported that they could be sold to South Africa as Gautrain (I think is the name) already have Electrostars, which look rather different, but technically are similar, although this has not happened. Presumably they have some equipment at Worksop in order to plug the units in to an electrical supply in order to keep things working.

That would have entailed the very expensive provision of new bogies as South African Railways are 3 ft 6 ins gauge!

At some point, it may be logical for their current owner to dispose of them simply not to have the uncertainty and the work, because if they're really never going to be leased then they no longer have value as whole trains.

One might hope that they got sold on to someone at a knockdown, who could then afford to offer them to the network at a more competitive rate. But probably not worth holding your breath.

The problem, I suspect, is going to be if they deteriorate during storage. They’ve already been stored for some months, and in the case of Harwich in a pretty exposed location.

There’s also the issue that there are other surplus EMU fleets, so anyone taking them on even at scrap value could still be lumbered with a liability that they can’t lease.

It doesn’t help that they’re the wrong sort of train for Southeastern metro, as that’s currently the only place where new EMUs are being considered.
