Not in the slightest, you just engineer this small issue out. All's required is for the "3rd rail present then drop" feature to be overridden by the driver pressing the "PAN UP" button, but that button is two buttons, sufficiently apart on the desk to require both hands, and for them to be live, master switch to be in neutral, therefore due to the SSF on the DSD, the train has to be stopped, or very nearly stopped. If no wire, pan goes up, goes too high and falls again, but he train isn't moving anywhere fast. This is entirely right side,. Forgetting to press the down button before the wire runs out (with no auto feature) is wrong side - you get an out of gauge train for a non OLE line, and in all locations where the wires about to disappear you have a 3rd rail, so it is fail safe. Obviously, in case of HT trips or the VCB not closing after a neutral gap, you'd need a separate "AC SYSTEM RESET" button. All these things are possible, but, they do cost - I grant you.
