Aside from the interior and the 378's walk through layout, Classes 377 and 378 appear virtually identical. Just wondering why the 377's have a maximum speed of 100mph while the 378's only have a maximum speed of 75 mph.
Obviously the 378's will never be driven at 75mph in their current location, but who is to say they will not eventually go elsewhere?
378s are about half as powerful as the 377s, and 379s are only marginally more powerful than 378s. They use a different electrical standard through the train to the earlier Electrostars, the same as 379s. As a result the pins are the wrong way round or something nonsensical.
The door mechanisms are different, camera software, arrangement of brake cables, interior electronics are all different from earlier Electrostars, but essentially variation on a theme.
A lot of what was used for 378s was beefed up for 379s. I suspect the new order for Southern will see only the bodyshells taken from 379s because that is the available presses. The rest of it will still be in line with the existing 377s.
