You seem to have a big problem with SN's 1st Class. Do you purchase 1St Class tickets or do you just get fined by RPOs for sitting there with STD?

The /6 units weren't supposed to have 1st Class at all. Like 455s as they were destined for Metro work. The partitioning doors are installed anyways incase of operator change ETC. However, last minute these have been diagrammed for East Grinstead trains and were on some Weekend Brightons, so some 1st Class accommodation was provided.

I do agree the seats on /6 units are poor!

I must be one of very few who actually like the seats. Fine, you wouldn't want to spend a long time in one but they're more comfortable than the 375/9 and 377 3+2 seats. They also feel good for posture and they seem to be a little higher than most train seats.

I would agree with you to a certain extent, however I must take note of the fact that the seats that are on the 455's/377's are padded differently, so the 377/6 seats are more comfy than the 377 3+2's but not as comfy as the 455's. The astroturf does not help with this comparison.

I had my first ride on of these today and I have to say I think they are awful. Seats are nothing short of shocking, the announcements are far too loud, the lights far too bright....

I also didn't realise how many of them there were, I waited 20 minutes and not one single 455 came into Victoria.

I want my 456's back :(

There are only 26 377/6s which form 12 trains in the peak. However, they are "flighted" on to the busiest services in the peak from Victoria since that way the busiest trains have 10 rather than 8 coaches.

Try weekends, then you'll think there aren't very many 377/6s as most departures from Victoria remain 455s (and that is consistent with the fact that there are 46 455s and 26 377/6s).

PS samj - you have 377616 on both trains at Horsham. What is the fourth unit stabled there?

Fincra5 - I do have a first class ticket, and the issue is about the confusion around the provision of the accommodation. Southern have made it such a muddle that first is often being used (sometimes innocently) by those who haven't paid for it, and then in other cases NOT being used by those who are entitled to (i.e. on Metro workings), mostly because of the poor perception of the differences in accommodation and the areas in which it does and does not apply. The poor quality definition of the accommodation does nothing to help. I can think of no other UK (or world-wide) operator who has created such a mess of a simple regime. Southern (or successor) should either adopt a sensible first class policy or abolish it, eliminating confusion either way. Not so long ago, BR managed to run stock with first class on main line routes and that without it on suburban runs (with occasional exceptions). There is no reason why this could not have been the case today, but a muddled policy has led to the current mess.

Could we stop complaining about first class - we accept that on some units it is terrible but its not as bad as southeastern. First class will get you a seat in the rush hour-that is it's primary use on southern. If you are lucky you will get a bigger seat, a compartment and plug sockets. I have a thread if you want to rant on endlessly about first class.

Travelled on 616 yesterday. Agree about the announcements, too loud.

...but I found the seats to be to my liking! Nice and upright, firm and comfortable enough for probably an hour or so.

My god as per usual moaning southerners on a different planet to the rest of the country, maybe 5 northern rail buses should be sent down to replace one of the 377/6 pairs and see how you like that!!!

I'd love to see the faces at Haslemere and Godalming if a 6 car 142 or 150 rocked up on 1P16;)

'This train is for Southampton central. We are now approaching Fareham' whereas the 'we are now approaching...' Used to be adequate <D<D

As for sending pacers for 377/6's, you won't hear me complaining!

can someone here define 'old train' here ?
the 1960 stock is long gone, the oldest stuff in service is on the IOW, i dont see the iows cascading to merseyrail anytime soon,

the 313s are 38 years old and there is nothing yet built that will beat them in their jobs, they have at least another ten years service before their fuses are removed permantly.

the next fleet i reckon to be replaced will need to be 507/8, merseyrail is a very intensive network and thes

314, 315, 318 and 320 are doing fine and wont go anywhere soon, class 456 are now going to the place they were supposed to go when introduced - the south western division.

321/4 have already cascaded to Hornsey ,

the 319s will soon be moving on to the western, the usual cascading of stock etc will occur as it always did in the BR DAYS....i would be very surprised if the TOCS dont talk about stock transfer etc

The passengers sit in the stock they can feel the ride quality, know when the track is needing a tamp , its the front seaters, the guards and the maintenance staff who really know their fleets, when a unit lags, badly brakes, dont feel right,etc..

the northern lines have new desiro diesels, the 333 emu, and half a dozen other classes, specifically built for the northern jobs, the express sprinters, 158's etc...
i know several depots down south who would have killed for some express sprinters instead of the rubbish they were given...

anyway i dont know what im ranting about...but i feel better for it

Why don't you get over it! did I actually say anything about old trains, yes we certainly have some of the most crap trains that's for sure, while southerners moan about excellent brand new trains, and the seats being too hard etc etc, even though they are really only intended for some fairly short runs anyway,

Yet, the oldest MUs in the country are in the south...

So what by a couple of years perhaps.

Yes there are some old trains in London and some old trains up North that's not really the point, London and the South East is getting significant investment in new trains but all you southerners do is moan about the seats and the PIS being too noisy.

If we got the Rail Buses down there pref the Merseyrail ones, then you can moan about the seats, the engine noise, the lack of aircon, the terrible suspension and ride, flee ridden interior, lack of step free access etc, etc.

Although there are still a fair number of late 60s and early 70s MUs on the London Underground. But it's not really about north v south...

but all you southerners do is moan about the seats and the PIS being too noisy
Actually I live in Newcastle upon Tyne. And I moan about the awful PIS on the refurbished T&W Metro units.

Im thinking that if southern could just extend their current path in to rugby or even bns , extend to three bridges for gatwick it will continue to flourish even more than it does now...maybe a collaboration with LM to use train crews on services north and south of the river . just a thought

Why would Southern go to Barnes?

Four pairs of /6s out on Victoria to Dorking services today on a 2.5 hour repeat. The other duty is a pair of /4s.

From Victoria:

1140 617/614
1210 620/603
1240 612/623
1310 609/604
1340 404/458

This is the first report of 603 in service on this forum although as it seems to have moved to Selhurst last weekend it is quite possible that it isn't its first day out. Anyway, all in service now.

603 has been at Selhurst for a few weeks now. But I believe this is the first report of it in service. Certainly hadn't been in service earlier this week.

Us traincrew have moaned about these too... A Brighton to Portsmouth Harbour (all stops) with those new announcements is torture!

Glad when I see my workings are booked 313s now!!!
