It will need another refurbishment by the time it gets into service at this rate.

This hardly gives me much confidence in them being able to do the entire fleet.

To be fair, a lot of the hard design work and planning will have been done now. From now on, bar a few tweaks here and there - based on feedback or other requirements, it will be just a case of repeating the same process over and over. It should be a lot quicker.

But you're still right to be concerned! If the feedback comes back that there need to be major changes, or the new things start to fall off.. it's back to square one!

Based on the C6 work that Wabtec performed on the 321's where 321303 (the first one to be done) was in Doncaster for about 6 months, this seems to be par for the course. The rest of the units seemed to get turned around much quicker.

I'd expect that, assuming they go ahead and refurbish the whole class, they wouldn't take over a year to finish each one!

If we wanted to wait that long, we'd have given the work to Bombardier surely?!

Well, I was hoping to gaze into Ilford on my way home this evening. Unfortunately, the incident at Chadwell Heath put paid to that.

As for the timing, I thought the fleet was planned to be done over 4 years 2015-2019? I suppose that makes it about 2 weeks per unit, and given they can't have that many out of service at once I suppose that's fair. The long wait between the first unit arriving and the others being done somewhat surprises me though. Still, a fully refurbished fleet of 321s should tie in nicely with the thameslink and crossrail opening dates by the look of things.

I had a little look inside it earlier, it really does look neat, the vestibules are completely different, theres cool little blue LED's in the window frames, the toilets look much much better and modern, powered slidey door into first class, overall very nice. The cab is still the same tho =/

I now await the review from one of our resident GA fans, which might go something like this....

I had a little look inside it earlier, it really does look cheap, the vestibules are already filled with mud, theres tacky little blue LED's in the window frames, the toilets look all horrid and 'modern', a sure-to-fail powered slidey door into first class, overall very horrible. At least the cab is still the same.

BTW, I really want to see this in service. Will GA be advertising its whereabouts?

Don't think it'll be in service for a while, the fleet staff have to get acquainted with all the new stuff first incase it fails

According to the Dft timings the new franchise will not be let until mid to late 2016 and no contract for any refurb will be signed before then.

And that is if it is included in the new 7 year franchise proposed by the Dft.....bear in mind any bidders for this short contract now have to fund brand new Norwich trains with NO financial support from the Dft......

As I have said before unless the Dft stipulate the contract be signed then this unit is increasingly looking like a white elephant!

Once again the clowns at the Dft are dicking us all around!

hold fire.....this might actually make it happen.....

Fair enough :) It did amuse me when touring the Southminster branch on a 321 that the driver sat out the turnaround period in first class reading a paper rather than stay in the cab!

The hold up on organising the refurbishment until the new franchise is a bit confusing. Isn't the timing of the units being refurbished between the DfT and the ROSCO? Or do they want to use refurbished stock as a selling point of the new franchise?

Wouldn't the ROSCO be proposing these upgrades primarily by itself, and adjusting the leasing costs as appropriate? At a franchise changeover, that would seem like a good time to be able to adjust the cost.

But that doesn't mean the upgrade work couldn't begin beforehand. The ROSCO can be pretty sure that these trains, especially in their refurbished state, will be in use (and in great demand) for many years to come.

ROSCO will not take the risk.

Unless there is a contract on the table then status quo.

Really? For a train like a class 321? (I'd accept that statement for some stock).

Can there be any possible risk for a near go-anywhere train like that, and other trains built around the same era?

Yes, as there may be a decision that says buy new.

Maybe, but I'd be pretty confident that it wouldn't happen on these trains.

Let's say these trains come off lease. The ROSCO would then have to either slash the price to get someone else to take them as is, consider scrapping them, or do the upgrade work itself and suddenly have loads of interest.

The same goes for the 317s (especially the 317/7s) and 319s.

And also the 313s and 315s in due course.

It does not matter to the Rosco, I would imagine the Rosco has already written off the 321's on their books.

I prefer small franchises personally - IMO some smaller franchises (e.g. Anglia Railways, Silverlink, Midland Mainline) were better than the larger franchises that replaced them.

But wouldn't it make more sense to split the West Anglia routes to Cambridge and Stansted from the Great Eastern and Anglia parts of the franchise rather than what they're proposing (a West Anglia Great Eastern franchise and a separate Anglia InterCity/Rural franchise). Or am I thinking common sense again  I'd wager anyone a £ that it wouldn't happen anyway.

And how exactly would smaller franchises make new rolling stock more likely? (serious question)
