It's interesting. The old 317/7 layout is a totally different concept to the new one. The old layout, barring the vestibules, would be suitable for long distance services- indeed they were briefly used on Norwich services. THe new layout appears not to have tables, and they've taken out a row of airline-style (windowless) seats in each section, with big wide vestibules.

So it's not a fair comparison. It's like comparing the interior of a 444 to a 455.

Unfortunately, most interior designers think that the interior looking modern is more important than it actually being comfortable or practical, as is the way with most 21st century train designs.

Don't see the point of having plug sockets and wi-fi on short-haul commuter units. Long-haul, yes.

The 395s have plug sockets - if you know where to find them.

You'd have thought they could have at least smartened up the other carriages a bit, new seats covers and a lick of paint etc. Doesn't really seem fair comparing a brand new interior with one which hasn't been changed in far too long. To be fair, the Stansted Express interior doesn't look that dated compared to some.

The Stansed Express Interior is equivalent to the refub'ed 156s that were done this year :P It is new in comparison to the FGE 321/3

All the possessions for the test runs have been cancelled, unless they pull their fingers out won't be doing anything in the near future.

Just been part of the first trial overnight and have to say was impressed with the performance of the new AC motors. Also the new interior looks nice but there seems to be a lot of extra room for people to stand.... :/

It's also been doing some high speed running around stowmarket and Diss recently. Too many speed TSR's on the Clacton branch to get up to speed properly.

A branch line with a relatively high speed out of the way of overnight freight traffic.

The guys at my Depot who have been driving it or route conducting if they don't sign 317's have said it has new AC motors with regen braking but the controls are all still the same with a 3 step brake and 4 notch power controls.

I've shunted it around the yard a few times, it has a slight whine to it, kind of 360 ish but not so loud. I'm not sure what the brakes are like on the mainline but in the yard at slow speeds they were very jolty. Again, very similar to how 360's are when in restricted mode with normal 3 step brakes rather then the smooth brakes.
