That was 315809. It came through Tottenham Hale around lunchtime assisting 317510 that failed earlier this morning back to Ilford. I believe 809 had a fault on it too, but I can't remember what. 317510 failed on departing platform 5 at Cambridge this morning working an Ely service with a loss of power.

But like you, I'm not sure how it ended up that far north in the first place. But stranger things have happened than 315's ending up at Cambridge.

I'm afraid I was PASS up this morning so wasn't really paying attention, but it's very likely that 315809 had been stabled at Bishops Stortford overnight. With the Stratfords all CAPE'd and the Cl317's falling like flies it is likely that this was the only unit available to go and assist. I know the formation took a breather at Bishops Stortford in the back platform on the way back up because I could hear the Cl317's hustle alarms going constantly and saw the units coupled together.

Mind you, I have seen 2 x Cl315's work down to Cambridge as a semi-fast in the evening peak before now.

most appreciated gents- it was an odd sight at the start of a long journey.

Mention of the service to Ely from Platform 5- I've wondered about this before, as if I cycle to work I see it as I go over the Mill Road bridge at about twenty five past seven (ish?) I take it this is a case of making what would otherwise be ECS a passenger service?

Rare as it is, 315s have run in service on the Liverpool Street - Cambridge line both in the days of WAGN and NXEA.

Indeed, they've also made it up the other side to Witham (just this week), Colchester and Ipswich.

Better than nothing

The aftermath of Hatfield produced all sorts of unusual workings:

GNER utilising 365s between Kings Cross and York
313s reaching Cambridge
And I may have been imagining things, but I'm sure I saw a train at Kings Cross advertised as running to Stansted (presumably reversing at Cambridge)

And NSE days occasionally saw 313s and 321s on West Anglia services.

Cheers,

Barry

No you probably weren't imagining things as I've seen 313s with a Stansted destination as well!

They've also got Spalding as well.....

Any idea if any 315s are likely to be running that far as to Cambridge on Saturday?

A lot of the former WAGN units had the same destination blinds, so seeing a train at LKX with Stansted Airport on the front does not mean it was actually going there. Our Cl315's and Cl317's had all the GN destinations, including Moorgate, together with Leeds, York and Spalding. It just meant that they only needed to print up one batch of blinds rather than two.

I'm not sure Cl365's were used to cover GNER services when the Mk4's were withdrawn for checks. I know they used Northern's Cl321's as single units and pairs of WAGN Cl317's, but I'm not sure the Cl365's were used. Cl313's were then "stepped up" to cover for units in use with GNER.

321's were regular performers on West Anglia services when new. 313's were not unknown as at the time they worked into Liverpool St on NL services via Graham Road Curve. I have travelled on several 313's on Hertford East Services

The mk4 problems were in 1996? I am not sure if the 365s were fully in service at that point. There was a photo of a couple of 317s at Newcastle. Like o l Liegh states I don't think the 365 has ever covered GNER. The only time I have seen them north of York was during testing.

Sandy was 1998. 317's and WY 321's were used but I cannot verify whether or not the 365's hit the lines north of Peebo

I don't think GNER used the 365's as WAGN only had half the fleet at that time, where as they had a lot of 317's.

Some 315 fun today

2B11 10.03 Stansted Airport - to London Liv Street was formed by a 315 failed at Stansted Mountfitchet, then was assisted by 1B37 10.15 SSD - LST (2x317s) to Bishop's Stortford, where it arrived 135 late.

Fairly sure said apparent Stansted service actually appeared on the departure boards at Kings Cross...But that was a long time ago, so I may be misremembering, or just plain imagining it.

315802. When the 317's were coupled up to the 315, the breaks still wouldn't come off the 315 hence the reason it took longer to move than it probably should have done.
