But like you, I'm not sure how it ended up that far north in the first place. But stranger things have happened than 315's ending up at Cambridge.
The aftermath of Hatfield produced all sorts of unusual workings:
GNER utilising 365s between Kings Cross and York
313s reaching Cambridge
And I may have been imagining things, but I'm sure I saw a train at Kings Cross advertised as running to Stansted (presumably reversing at Cambridge)
And NSE days occasionally saw 313s and 321s on West Anglia services.
Cheers,
Barry

The mk4 problems were in 1996? I am not sure if the 365s were fully in service at that point. There was a photo of a couple of 317s at Newcastle. Like o l Liegh states I don't think the 365 has ever covered GNER. The only time I have seen them north of York was during testing.
Sandy was 1998. 317's and WY 321's were used but I cannot verify whether or not the 365's hit the lines north of Peebo
A lot of the former WAGN units had the same destination blinds, so seeing a train at LKX with Stansted Airport on the front does not mean it was actually going there.
Some 315 fun today
2B11 10.03 Stansted Airport - to London Liv Street was formed by a 315 failed at Stansted Mountfitchet, then was assisted by 1B37 10.15 SSD - LST (2x317s) to Bishop's Stortford, where it arrived 135 late.
