Just noticed an old thread on this which didn't seem to be fully resolved.

I have the return portion of an off-peak return from Chesterfield to Penrith, code 2v. I need to be back in Penrith by midday and that's not possible in one journey.

So I intend to travel back on day 1 off-peak as far as Manchester, stay overnight then get the first off-peak train from Manchester to Penrith on day 2.
BOJ is permissible so I can't see an issue.

The earlier thread suggested that I could be challenged on day 2 on the grounds that I must have left Chesterfield in the morning peak on the same day! Surely that's not the case ... am I over-thinking problems here?

I don't think that'll be an issue. More likely is that if you have the date scribbled on the ticket on day 1, you may be questioned about why it's got yesterday's date on it, on day 2. From personal experience, Manchester Piccadilly's STM gateline staff are largely incompetent when it comes to understanding multi-day BoJ, with many claiming it isn't allowed. However, what you propose is completely valid and within the rules.

Note that there is no restriction between 24/12 and 01/01.

You absolutely can break your journey overnight (as often as you like, and for as many nights as you like within the validity of the ticket) and resume from 0930.

There is no need to take a train any later than 0930; you don't need to worry about hypothetical journeys before 0930 that you have not made.

If any employee either employed by or acting on behalf of a train company refuses to accept your valid ticket (because they do not understand the break of journey rights) and you are asked to pay more or refused travel (access to train services) and have to buy another ticket under duress, then the train company will have breached the contract they have formed with you. In which case, I would be inclined to pay whatever they said (if your explanations to them fail) and keep all tickets and receipts, and come back here for advise. There are many on here who will happily assist you in trying to get the money back from the train company - plus compensation - afterwards.

Thanks Yorkie, I thought that was the case.

Another similar query is regarding the train I used to catch with work, trying to get from Manchester to Bristol early afternoon. I caught the 09:27 (I think) from Manchester on which an off-peak ticket was of course not valid from Manchester, but boarded at Stockport at which time it had passed the 09:30 cutoff so I was not travelling in peak with an off-peak ticket. However my return journey usually involved a fairly late arrival so I preferred to travel back into Manchester for better buses so I always bought a Manchester-Bristol off-peak return rather than a Stockport one.

If on the outward journey no tickets had been checked between Manchester and Stockport I suppose I ran the risk of being accused of boarding in Manchester on an invalid ticket, in practice I never had an issue.

You are indeed correct buy "2V" is an odd one though- usually time restrictions from the origin apply on subsequent days after BOJ (what time for example would an PNZ-PAD SSR boarding at Reading be vaild ?) but not "2V". It's just 0930 from anywhere.

Most tickets to London Terminals are restricted by arrival time. Penzance to London is an odd one; it could be argued that any train that has not originated from the list of stations provided can be used from Reading to Paddington, and it's only the trains that have called at those stations before the specified times are restricted. Of course, I doubt that's intentional. But that is what it is!

I wish that they would also apply this rule to parking charges at all stations! Last year during this period between Christmas and New Year, I went to Chesterfield station and found that the peak time parking charge before 10.00 am of about £11 still applied. I was expecting it to be the usual off peak charge of around £5 that I pay on a Saturday. Very annoying in that holiday period when few people are at work and the car park was quite empty at around 8.00 am. Surely the machines ought to be reprogrammed for those few days.
