Last time I had "Fearless" up Shap, it was leading "Vanguard" (which was throwing plenty of oil at us in the front coach....), on 1988's Fellsman 2 tour.

I'm assuming Andania will drag the 50 back to Crewe on its move back perhaps?

Kinda wish they just stack all of the locos on the train as it goes on then run back to Crewe with 7 locos haha.

Yes that’s my assumption too. Talk onboard is that a 40 heading a 50 last occurred in 1984!

I was sat at platform 1 at Whalley station today when this came through, around 13.45. The loco at the rear was #50050.

I have to say, kudos to LSL for pulling off today's tour in the end. Felt like every enthusiast in the country saw it at some point today so really good showing.

I saw it eight times in total, six of which at full power so certainly an excellent day overall.

Hope that sentiment is also felt by those who actually managed to be behind today's traction!

Top marks to LSL for putting this one on, I expect as it was so popular that it won't be the only time we see a tour like it...footage from an epic day of D400 at Tebay, 45118 at Ais Gill, D213 at Eldroth, the 37's at Walk Mill and Leyland and the 20's also at Leyland, with a shot of 34067 on the Northern Belle thrown in too.

Fully agree that it was an excellent tour, and LSL have enough loco's to run something similar without too much repetition so I'm sure we will see more like this in the future.

An excellent day all round. Air con seemed OK in H though we were at the peak end which was the electrical supply. 90mph running from the 50 I got 46mph at Shap summit on GPS.

Failed outside Carlisle with the issues mentioned above but the crew managed to get it into the station 4 mins adrift. Very credible.

H was at the front for a strong run from the 45 and right time. Fantastic weather made the S&C look glorious.

At the rear for the 40/50 combo. Kept good time but the 45 shoving by all accounts on several sections. 85mph at Garstang.

+51 late departure South with the tractors but they sounded great even from the back. Track circuit failure or axle counter issue somewhere near Wigan apparently put the LE moves behind. The route into and around Manchester gave plenty of viewing opportunities from inside of the pair on the curves.

The 20's for the final part of the run were a credit to LSL. They looked immaculate (as did all the other locos) and the 45 was once again giving some healthy assistance I think. Glorious noise from all involved. +32 back to Crewe. Drive back got me into bed at 01.15.

Knackered now.

Thanks mate, much appreciated. Surprisingly didn't get bitten at all, even when wading through the tall grass and bogs to Ais Gill viaduct and back to see if there was a shot possible there...

Yesterday, yes.

Pretty much standard these days to have an early start to get to a tour. It wasn't even that early off Crewe through, was it? *edit - just checked, 0802 off Crewe. That's a lie in.

We’re used to it these days, and if it saves some money on hotels (although I did actually stay in a hotel the night before this time, just not near Crewe), then it’s more money for tours. It’s also very easy driving at anti-social times. There’s always the option of a nap on the train if needed.

Class 45 locomotives were part of the everyday scene from the early 1980s over the TransPennine routes between Liverpool Lime Street and York, Scarborough and Newcastle. This train is an attempt to recreate those days although the TrannsPennine Route Upgrade does preclude the operation via Dewsbury & Leeds on this date. Class 45 (D67/45118) is scheduled for this journey.

Thanks, looks a good tour although I'm going to give it a miss myself. It's good, but I've travelled behind the Peak recently and it's not quite enough to warrant a winters drive over the Peaks to Crewe and what would be another very long day at a busy time of year.

Twelve hours from start to finish is rather sociable I would say, the Saphos train I did recently was 18.5 hours from departure to return!

Many people who have to travel a distance will probably consider booking a hotel at Crewe before or after the tour (or both) but of course this can add a substantial amount to the overall cost of doing the tour.
