Hammond has a bloomin cheek classing these as 20 of his extra caradges, typical tory! (My opinion there)! 20 years old perhaps but when they transfered for what at the time was for good, scotrail did a great refurb on them meaning when they get to yorkshire they can pritty much be plugged in and switched on! However, I suspect part of the budget mentioned wil be to cover a repaint and also conversion of the large cycle area which i guess Northern woant wish to keep? They have pis, 3 plus 2 seating and have served us well. Glad northern are getting them, they deserve something better than lm's nacked 150s!

If someone tries to take away the 333's that we (and S Yorks) paid for, we should kick up a stink, but otherwise any additional stock for more services should be welcomed with open arms.

Agreed, like we did with the threat of the 333's heading for Manchester, we waited years for new stock and are not going to allow it to disappear that easily!!!

Nice to see so many people liking the class 333 when a lot of new stock comes under criticism ie voyagers and pendolinos although perhaps long distance stock generates more complaints.

AFAIK they are in First barbie livery so will the head to NXEA for a short period (as originally intended) before moving to Northern?

Let's hope the livery is more inspiring than the current class 333 livery. At least the colours are similar to Northern's passengers will see them as new in the North I imagine!

If the correct seating and a plug or 2 were fitted to 333s i'd happilly go to London on one. Great units. Do NXEA have a need/use for them as didnt think they'de have rollingstock probs now with the 379s rolling out? Or is there a refurbishment planned for the x stansted sets?

A lot of it depends on what new stock replaced.

Voyagers replaced the last long distance daytime loco hauled trains, so were always going to struggle to win enthusiasts hearts. 333s replaced knackered 308s which really should have been in a museum

Good to see where some additional carriages for Caldervale services are going to come from due to the arrival of the 322s, thanks. It does seem that the majority of the diesel turns are short fill-in duties that wouldn't really release a whole unit for other services, assuming that those units see use on diesel lines during the rest of the day (The biggest exception to that idea is the 158 diagram at the top). Plenty of extra capacity on the West Yorks electric services though when the 322s arrive, which is great news, and should standardise the service and reduce the requirement for diesels running under the wires in this area. Great stuff.

Metros' 333 fleet really should have been a nice, round twenty units, to replace the 321s on Leeds to Doncaster and ensure that the 333 fleet wasn't so stretched on the West Yorks services. I'm pleased to see that ten years on something similar is finally going to happen with the 322s arriving.

All the second hand 321s (ex LM) were treated as 'additional carriages' by DfT, as were the 150s going to FGW and Northern. Most of these cascades were planned by the previous 'typical labour' Transport Minister, this is definitely not a new idea Hammond has come up with.

c) There was talk a while back of improving the triangle service and there was uproar (I think it was transferred 323s that were suggested) in the local papers about it being old stock....
,

How ungrateful can you get? If I was the operator in this case I'd say ' Fine then, cram yourselves in like sardines'. I don't suppose there was any such uproar when the old 308s were introduced on the newly electrified line.

I can understand the problem if the whole fleet of 333s were going to be moved, however.

The point was touched on earlier; could some of these 'new' units replace the Leeds-Morecambe's between Leeds-Skipton? The faster acceleration would allow the current Morecambe paths to stop at more of the intermediate stations and it might allow for DMUs to work a higher frequency service between Skipton-Morecambe. I'm sure many people on the Little North Western would accept changing at Skipton for a more frequent service? I used to live at Hellifield and I know I would have welcomed that kind of arrangement.
