Don't know about you boys, but I'm off to the pub tonight to celebrate the 1p fuel duty cut! Diesel went up 2p a couple of days ago but now it's only a 1p increase thanks to No 11. Every little helps

Are you sure about that, i thought all they did was to scrap the planned increase.

I find it somewhat annoying that duty on a pint of beer is up yet again, yet the alcoholics will doubtless still be able to stock up on cheap rocket fuel at the supermarket.

The minimum unit price for alcohol would be far better (so long as it is less than the price of pub beer of course).

At least they've put a small increase on tobacco duty. Personally, I think smoking is a much more serious problem.

It will have little benefit, as the oil companies will not be expecting the massive tax increase on North Sea Oil profits, so will no doubt add this on the oil cost

The main benefit is the withdrawal of the planned 5p duty increase

In all seriousness (if this is serious), do they do penny sweets anymore? All the pick 'n' mix I have seen are expensive. Can't even get cola bottles for a decent price anymore

Well, with the economy the way it is they're more like 5p now. But yes, penny sweets are still sold - my local newsagents still does it!

Depends which way you look at it of course, presumably from the NHS side. On the other hand, alcohol is just as much of a burden on the NHS. It's also revelant that I have never seen anyone get a pasting because a guy had smoked too many cigarettes.

I would have to recommend that those who are able to (for business reasons, or whatever) go to Makro, and by a large pot. That way, they are less than a penny!

When I wad a lad Black Jacks and Fruit Salads (both chews) were the cheapest. Can you still buy them? They were 4 for as penny, that's a D penny not a P penny. That would make them about 3p each nowadays, assuming things are about 30 times as expensive now.

I totally agree. I've never liked them. Although Fruit Salad's are better, they're not my favourite sweet. That has to go to mint imperials or pear drops.

Shell put up their prices by 2p last night. No change after 18.00 today either.

Not expecting any sort of decrease, after all they'll be paying more to extract from the North Sea so what is the point of passing on the 1p reduction at the pump?

Still, we should have a safe supply of oil from Libya soon - oh wait....

I don't buy petrol so have no idea what the price for it is/was so can't say if my local filling station have reduced the price. BBC News showed a Shell garage earlier reducing the prices of unleaded by one pence earlier.

it's you! Increasing the VAT was done earlier in the year by raising it from 17.5% to 20% across the board

There seems to be two types of Shell garage - one with some sort of supermarket Express store attached (normally Spar) and the ones without. Guaranteed that the price per litre at the one with the Spar is 5p more expensive than the one without (probably due to the franchising agreement I expect). Unfortunately the one I use is the one without the shop, which hasn't taken off the 1p so I wouldn't expect the one with Spar to have do so either.
