Was this tried in normal passenger service? Because only 47/7s could propel DBSO push-pull sets and they weren't allowed on the Kyle line.

Yes A DBSO was fitted on the E&G and a 37 on the Kyle line. It did not end well!

It was mounted on new B4 or Commonwealth bogies.

The photo caption is sightly confusing as it reads "(scrapped)". I thought the carriage was still in existence?

As per the very detailed response from @Up Main and the carriage survey article, the carriage was scrapped at CF Booth in 2010.
