Our local Newspaper, "The Northern Echo" did itself no favours describing them as "Class 180mph" trains.
Now how many readers will take that as true?

I noticed that as well, made me chuckle....again. I suppose it's a basic fact for us but obviously not for them but then again, why shouldn't we be head of editing in the transport section for NE newspapers?

In the last two years, so many magazines and newspapers have cut back on sub-editors (or axed them entirely) that mistakes like this are going to be commonplace.

You may not expect every journo to be an expert on everything (far from it - speaking for myself) but you need to check the basics. Did the author think the trains can go at 180mph? If so, GC should be getting many more column inches than that rather crappy service SET is launching!!

I've been trying to find out where I've seen that livery before, not easy when you're unfamiliar with US locomotives. Then Youtube recommended this vid to me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWGc8JAWWj0

Its not often that I get excited about a new livery but that is wonderful, just love it. I hope it stays for a long time to come because this is one that I'd actually miss if it disapeared. I think it may be safe to say that it's been inspired by the Southern Pacific 'Daylight' livery. Do a search for locomotive 4449 daylight on google and you will find some great pictures. The 'Daylight' livery has a lot less black and more red/ orange, and even more on the coaches, but it does look like the American influence has arrived.

Thanks for the pics!

A 180 unit in GC livery overtook me near Stevenage this evening, presumably working the 16:50 service from KX - a GC HST usually passes me in that area.

The GC class 180 performed faultlessly yesterday, the only delays being down to signalling problems, excellent service in First Class too!

For any other train I'd be saying 'and?' but when you read that a 180 performed faultlessly for a whole day - I'm surprised it's not interrupting ordinary television programming!

The 180s aren't that bad. Like most trains, they just need the correct maintenance, and like a lot of women, they are high maintenance :D.

Well they clear the tunnels out of Sunderland quickly and don't show any apparent problems with low speed running :)

112 seemed fine on the durham coast, but it might not have been on 5 engines, 1 might have been turned off
