Hi
As a newcomer to the world of trains can someone tell me what ATW 175's are powered by -- is it diesel or electric.

Thanks. M:D

Diesal. TOPS classification is 1xx, reserved for DMUs. One (QSK19?) engine underneath each car. Mechanical transmission, as do the class 180s, part of the Coradia 1000 family.

Diesel Engine underneath each Coach, this means there called a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU for short).

Whats interesting to know about the 175s, is that they were de-rated from 450hp to 400hp. But, they have a 'turbo' button which gives them the full 450hp used for accelerating.

Like a chaved up Vauxhall Corsa of the railways :D

That explains their superior acceleration off the mark. I must admit I do like the sound of the Cummins N14 engine fitted to the 175s, and they are the most comfortable of all of the DMUs built in the privatisation era (might be something to do with its Mk.3 coach underpinnings) with this trait being shared with the 180s.

If only they were more reliable and more were built instead of the amount of 170s we got instead.

I find it impossible to stop myself nodding my head in agreement with that last comment. Sick to the back teeth of 170s, they get seemingly everywhere. They don't earn their nickname 'TurboRats' for nothing!

175s can take off very quickly, fair play to that. As close to an aircraft's take-off feel as I'm going to get whilst remaining on the ground!

I'm a pretty big fan of 175s these days (when they're not broken) because yes they do shift off the mark, very quick units, and manage to keep to the timetable surprisingly well - In my experience I have known them to be at least 5-10mins early for a good percentage of the time, which is no surprise given that they are allowed to run at 100mph in HST speed limits over the standard 90 or so for other units. Didn't know about the turbo button though.... interesting to know! Nothing wrong with vauxhall corsas..... ! lol

I think I've said this before; I like 170s. Again, though, the Scotrail fleet is well maintained and they are great to travel on up here!

One thing I do like though, and this should be universal, is the large windows, and almost all seats are aligned to windows. Great for the scenic Scottish routes.

Not so sure about them being timetabled as 175s, not heard anything of it, but every once in a while when they c**k up with the units one turns up.

To be fair Alex, Arriva have done a good job getting the 175s up to scratch from when they first came out, I remember seeing a figure of 98.9% availabilty nowadays?

They are very reliable these days, I've only had one 175 fail on me (well, it kept going but one engine had had to be isolated due to leaks) that I can remember.

Ah right, could be platform ender talk then. I had heard back in the summer some 175s had been to Cheltenham on trials, but no-one else has heard owt on it.

And as most people always reply to this, the Scotrail 170s are the only decent 170s! :D To be fair, I have not travelled on another 170 that has been refurbed by its new operator since the shuffle last year, but the Centrals were awful...

I meant to reply to me123 before, but I felt lazy.

I agree too that the Scottish TurboRats are the best in the country. Nothing to do with performance or those spherical objects, just that they are the nicest to ride in.

Although AXC's 170 refurb jobbie is not bad, certainly a lot nicer than it was before!

The CT 170s are absolutely awful, how anyone could travel on them I don't know. I did it every time I went to Derby last year, I don't know how I got there and back without getting seriously annoyed. The LM refurb is nicer, although there are plenty of signs of CT everywhere you look on most of them still yet.

AXC's number of unrefurbished 170s is terrible, they've had a year to do it now and they've hardly scratched the surface.

Either way, when I go to Scotland in December I might be getting on some Scottish TurboRats, I should hopefully enjoy the experience.

lol - I take that with a pinch of salt!

They're very nice units for sure but they still always seem to be breaking down and the number of 158's substituting for 175's is just ridiculous. It's probably with the Welsh Assembly interfering - if a 175 breaks down on a South Wales run they'll tell Arriva to put another 175 on that diagram, so the North Wales diagrams are short of 175's as a result and I reckon that's why 158's always seem to be popping up on the coast.

I'm pretty sure it was First North Western who sent them in for the modifications in 2003 I believe.

Are the Midlands 170's really that bad? The FSR fleet seem fairly reliable, not noisy, comfortable and have a good passenger saloon. Their only fault in the winter is the door spacing and lack of vestibule doors (though sit in the middle coach of the ex-HT units if you can to avoid this :) Maybe they need to send the English nones to the Turbostar Engineering Centre at Haymarket when First and Bpombardier spent £6million on a special maintenance centre with Bombardier support etc. Its close to a Siemens style 'wet' maintenance regime.

It is alot better than it was when First North Western had them, although when one does go pop for some reason a 158 is always to the rescue, not just on the NWC, I've seen 158stitutions on the Marches too.

I actually think the 175 reliability was pretty decent around 2005/06/07 - just going off own experience and the smaller number of 158/185 substitutions. Not so much this year.

Perhaps they're just being over-stretched on crowded Marches diagrams?

Always thought 175's were excellent on their previous duties - Manchester Airport to Blackpool, Barrow and Windermere (gone but not forgotten on these routes). North and South TPE has got improved rolling stock in 185's, but I'm very dubious whether the North West routes have seen transport improved since 175's left the routes.

A few years ago I had to travel from Nottingham to Blackpool on a fairly regular basis.
After an overcrowded journey from Nottingham to Manchester, often on a 2 car CT 158, the change to a 175 for the journey from Manchester to Blackpool seemed like luxury!

I always thought that the Liverpool-Norwich service would be well suited to 3 car 175's if they could be reliable.

what?! They've nearly done all of them! Don't go on livery, loaaads of them are in CT / MML livery but are refurbished

The amount of them I saw on the 9th of November that were unrefurbished (something like half a dozen if memory serves) shocked me, a year in and they've not finished the job. Terrible...

djw1981: I thought the Midlands 170s were awful and they're no better under XC/LM. 170398 is the only refurbished 170 I've had with AXC so far and that was OK, but compared to the luxury of FSR 170s...:o
