Somewhat bizarrely, 155342 is currently on 1B33, the NT 1811 Blackpool N to York run, in place of a 158.

This led me to wonder, could this lead to any crewing issues? Are 155s signed for separately, or are they grouped with other Sprinter classes?

Cheers!

Although now uncommon, it is not unknown for Class 155 to appear on York - Blackpool services if a Class 158 is unavailable.

It must be very rare for that service to be anything but a 158. While some routes (e.g. Penistone Line etc) can vary massively, that route is so consistently operated by 158s that I can't remember ever seeing anything but a 158 on it.

In answer to the original posters question.
Each 15x is signed separately as they all have there own special quirks!!

Crewing shouldn't be an issue as Blackpool men sign them and all of the 'East side' depots sign 155's
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
In fact I think Piccadilly, Liverpool and Newcastle are the I only depots not to sign them.

Blackpool crews don't sign 155s. The only 'west' depot that do sign the 155 is Manchester Victoria.

155s are rare on the Blackpool-York service although they have been seen several times in the last few weeks and as long as the service has a Leeds crew both ways there is no problem.

A 142 was subbed a few years ago onto a York - Blackpool service, made it as far as Leeds before it was replaced.

I live near that line and most times it is a 158 running, usually a 3 car. However, I have seen many 150s, a 155 and a few 156s running the line. I think I might've even seen a 144 venture around here

Sorry Yorkie, but I have to disagree with you on this one! Over the last few months (although it's usually a 158), we have seen classes 142, 144 (3 car), 150/1, 150/2, 153, 155, and 156! (As always with the Northern Stock Roulette Wheel, you pays yer money and you takes yer chance! :p)

And, as driver9000 intimates, if a 158 is subbed for other another class, it sometimes presents problems at Blackpool North if not being taken by a Yorkshire crewe. Cancellations at Blackpool North are not unusual, with the unit attached to the next eastbound service to get it back.

A 144 (two car) made it over to Blackpool sometime last year, a 150 ended up on that route as well.

99.9% of the time it's a 158, though frequently only two cars.

I had a pair of 142 pacers on it once.

I'm pretty certain Blackpool guards at least sign 155's as I did my traction training at Newton Heath with a pair of Blackpool Guards who had them put on their cards.

It's not THAT rare to be fair; I have seen a 155 quite a few times on the route. Although yes about 85% of the time it is a 158.

I'm also pretty certain that Blackpool guards sign 155's, although I'm not sure about drivers. Vic certainly do.

I also think that Vic and Blackpool are the only West side depots to still sign 158's, although most of the other depots used to sign them some years back.

As mentioned above Blackpool crew don't sign 155's so they are unable to work the 05:29am, 06:29am, 07:29am 11:29am, 12:29pm, 13:29pm trains from Blackpool - Leeds or the 08:52am, 09:52am 10:52am, 16:52pm, 18:52pm or 20:50pm trains from Leeds - Blackpool Nth

Not normally a problem as an inbound Leeds crew takes the next outbound service back. You are right in saying that a cancelled service from Blackpool North has its stock attached to the next York service.

Yes i remember a 3 car 144 making the foray last year if i remember right? They should give an ok ride as theres not many long sections of jointed track now only at some stations & junctions.

a combination of 150s/155s/142s were quite common years ago when it was just Preston - Leeds only, probably in its early days of revival before it became an hourly service.

I suppose if there are no 158s available then a 155 is the next best thing, before using a 150. With only ten units I would have thought that they would have allocated diagrams, with only a couple spare in maintenance so if one appears away from it's normal haunts (don't know what these are these days) then it must be a case of best available stock.

I worked them a few times between 2002-2004 from Blackpool to Leeds and VV.

Most importantly, they keep time and there's plenty of seats on them; and unlike a 158 I once had at Poulton-le-Fylde, they've never spontaneously combusted at 75mph :P

Weren't the 155s diagrammed to work the York - Blackpools for some years?

Before my time, perhaps. In 2000, you'd look down at the guards docket.... 3-car 158 booked.

You'd look up and in rolled a dusty bin 155 :(

I thought the 321s were the "Dusty Bins"; the 7 remaining 155s are double dog-boxes!

As I live in Blackpool, Class 155s have worked on Leeds to Blackpool North, but this must have been in their early years, before some units were converted into Class 153s.

This was in the days when units were painted in WYPTE livery.

I also remember Class 156s working this route.

I have seen 155s and 150s operate this route quite often. Not common but not unheard of.

Just double checked with someone who knows everything. Contrary to my previous post, Blackpool don't sign 155's but do sign their one car equivalent, the 153.

That doesn't tally with my observations. In 2004, I recall the York to Blackpool services being virtually booked solid for 155s, they were the regular traction and judging by various photos on the internet had been since at least 2001.

The York to Blackpool route only went over to 3-car class 158 operation once former TPE centre cars had been inserted into the eight former First North Western 158s at the start of the Northern franchise. I cannot recall that the 3-car Transpennine 158s ever appeared regularly on York/Leeds to Blackpool services in Northern Spirit/ATN days when they were in operation.

Going back to the early days of privatisation, the usual stock on Copy Pit services was indeed 155s and 156s, along with the WYPTE 158s. Once Northern Spirit had refurbed their 158s and fitted 1st class to all except the WYPTE 10, the 2-car variants often turned up on Blackpools though. It was always nice when the ones with 1st turned up, as most passengers assumed they weren't allowed in!

Sorry to go off topic, but if the three car 158s aren't on the Blackpool services so often nowadays, where are they? On the Calder Valley services to Manchester Victoria?

Just wondering as I think I've only seen one in Sheffield (on a semi-fast via Barnsley) in recent years.

They are usually on the Blackpool Nth - York diagrams approx 4 or 5 out of the 8 three car 158's are usually on the Blackpool Nth -York diagrams however it is not unusual to see them on Man Vic - Leeds or Selby - Wakefield diagrams
