Never mind what ticket.

Make sure you advise your life insurance company that you are about to do this.
Such a hazardous persuit could be against policy conditions.

I stayed at a hotel in Cardiff a few years ago "The Big Sleep", Bute Terrace it overlooks the bridge that carries the 142s over the main line,if you book the correct room, when I stayed they were shunting 142s a dozen at a time linked up all night to I presume Canton from Queen St area. It was not by choice my room overlooked the wheel noise from the 142s on the bridge. However the late night HSTs broke the monotony.

For four days the above is a better deal.I see you have an interest in buses,no wonder you like 142s:)

Thats Probs why! i have spent the last couple of weeks ticking a number of in Merseyside but to get them all i have to come to Cardiff, a place i know nothing about! The main reason am determined to get them all is a few of my mates are having a healthy competition!

I had my room burgled there in 2007 never stayed there again. The Sleeperz is right next to Cardiff Central and £55 a night with the Great Western Wetherspoons right opposite. You'll get good views from there.

Pacers tend not to be on so many of the Merthyr to Bridgend via VOG trains but you 'll see them on all the others. The Queen St To the Bay branch had a 153 on it this Saturday gone but they'd swapped it for a Pacer by lunchtime due to crowds going down Bay for food and craft fair and extreme sailing event.

Wetherspoons Great Western is not a Wetherspoons Hotel.

Although booked for a 153 ATW usually allocate a 2 Car Unit on the Bay on Saturdays if there is large event taking place. Looks as though they missed this one and that heavy crowds during the day necessitated a change.

From personal experience the lines around Cardiff that are more pacer heavy are Bargoed/Rhymney - Penarth, Treherbert - Cardiff Central and Aberdare - Barry Island. The Merthyr - Bridgend train does tend to be a 150 more often than not. There is an odd Pacer working between Maesteg and Cheltenham Spa via. Cardiff. Also they occasionally they find themselves in West Wales!

The easiest way to clock up pacer mileage is to shuttle between Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Central.

You simply get off at one, swap platform sides then get on the next one, bounce, bounce, bounce, repeat.

It depends what exactly you're wanting to get out of this trip - but you can comfortably do the Valley Lines in a day or day and a half if you want some more time between trips. I'm thinking that 4 days in a row might get a bit dull - so maybe consider taking a trip round via the Heart of Wales line from Swansea one day?

I do hope to get something like that done aswell as i will be buying the Wales Rail Rover, Main reason am giving myself 4 Days is due to how long it takes to get there and back (about 5 hours just from my House to Cardiiff if i go by Train!)

I imagine it's more likely that some diagrams see units staying in Yorkshire within a given day, rather than a pool of units being specifically only used within the county. The 155s and 3-car 144s are mostly used on services partly or entirely within West Yorkshire as part of the deal that saw them sold to Porterbrook- but this will no longer be the case from the start of the new Northern franchise.

They aren't specific units, but there are a few diagrams that don't go near Manchester. Sheffield/Doncaster has a few, Preston and Wigan have a few.

Might also be worth noting that one or two Heaton (Newcastle) based 142s operate out of Newton Heath (Manchester) regularly.
