08 on main line

This morning 08882 hauled 37502 from Wolverton to bletchley along the WCML

Obviously I am at the other end of the country.......

Unusually not for the TMD but for use in Bletchley Carriage sidings and the freight sidings 9/10/11 + arrival line
Having TPWS and cab radio already fitted good to see a loco return locally.

Still in the sidings when I passed northbound on 1S52. Nice to see it out and about!

i wonder how long it will stay on site? I wonder why an 08 would be needed to shunt the carriage sidings?

I am led to believe this is more to do with the depot itself rather than the Sidings. As the depot is undergoing improvement works it is there to shunt materials etc around the works

I think the depot works are complete. There was a DBS class 66 in the carriage sidings today with a short rake of red wagons.

501 which was renumbered back from 601, 37 005 in old money prior to refurb in 1986, of 1960 Vintage, same age as the shunter.

I've seen a few references to the 37's presence as "insurance" - that being the case, why not just haul the 08 with the 37? Would be interested to understand the reasoning and process behind it. Must have been a clever bit of planning to get it down the WCML in daylight!

I think you have to remove the wheel bars? to haul an 08 so would have then needed to re-fit in the sidings at Bletchley

The 37 was en route Derby to Bicester so really just stopped off to provide a crew for the move, the 08 has TPWS and train radio .

There's half an hour between passenger services on the Down Slows north of MK, and it only needed to get from Wolverton to Denbigh Hall South, where it can turn out onto the Bletchley Relief No.2. At 15mph it'd have taken about 15 minutes to travel the c.4 miles, it's tight but not especially so, even with the 4 minute headway on the Slows.

Connecting rods removed and traction motors demeshed allows an 08 to be hauled at up to 25mph. I'm led to believe that demeshing traction motors on these isn't a particularly convenient job to do, so easier to have the 08 do the hauling at 15mph max. Also eliminates any possibility, however unlikely, of the 37 exceeding the 08s' limit.
