I don’t want to double back, but I’ve done Devon and Cornwall and the Far North line before, so I don’t mind skipping those. Re the latter, I’d go Inverness-Kyle, bus down through Skye and then go Mallaig-Glasgow. Happy to use preserved railways, e.g. Porthmadog-Blaenau.

Indeed - and for retired people like myself, the main issue isn’t holiday leave, but clashes with other booked arrangements, which precluded me from going on the Lord of the Isles trip and other trips. People really do need more notice.
