Old £1 coins-how to get rid?

TSB were accepting them at a branch paid in to a TSB account, as long as the coins were bagged up in coin bags - £20 per bag. That was certainly within the last year, but before the takeover by Santander.

    Football

It has been like that for a while, the 'Final Score' presenter (Jason Mohammed, usually) reading out the scores in the manner you describe. I agree that the programme should require the scores to be presented clearly, in particular for those who are partially sighted and rely on the clear ring...

    Alternatives during disruption

If you are in Poole, you would have to get to Bournemouth (I'm sure that there are Bournemouth region buses which do that). From Bournemouth the Salisbury Reds X3 operates to Salisbury half hourly during the day and hourly in the evening (less frequently on Sundays). ave a look at the Salisbury...

    Withdrawn/changed domestic ferry routes

Since one contributor raised his eyebrows at the early date of withdrawal of the ferry I mentioned upthread, here's something rather recent. Currently the Hythe Ferry (Hythe to Southampton) is suspended until further notice. Last update was 18th August 2025 (link). It connects to Hythe via the...

    Distinctive or unusual Cable Cars

Several older-style chairlifts in Switzerland used to do this. Grindelwald to First was in four sections, with three intermediate shunting stations. It has been replaced by a gondelbahn which features two shunting stations plus a slow-down-and-stop-by-prior-request mini-station which also...

    What made you happy today?

I have four water butts, 220 litres each. One out the front, three at the back. Those at the back are to water the fruit and veg in the greenhouse and the garden (others of course may prefer to grow flowers). That at the front is used with a pressure washer to wash the cars. I can just manage to...

    Minor Famous People Spotting

I would occasionally see Peter White (BBC Radio 4 presenter) waiting for a London Train at Winchester Railway Station, back in the days of South West Trains.

Is there a link between incidents including fire near Heathrow and North sea ship collision?

Super video description here (15minutes, on YouTube) of the many possible means by which a transformer fire can occur, with emphasis on the North Hyde substation. The video is descriptive rather than speculative. I left the electricity supply industry in 1982, however within my earlier...

Long vs short carriages, what are the advantages or disadvantage to each

Depending on the bogie spacing, longer carriages will overhang at the ends and/or the centre when going around corners. The tube dimensions determine the maximum carriage length (assuming optimised bogie spacing) for which the overhang doesn't quite knock the equipment boxes and cables off the...

    Fish and chips.......too pricey

Pineapple fritters were available in the chippy in New Marston, Oxford (row of shops opposite the top of Marston Road) in the late '70s. The Pizza Hut in the row of shops was also a pizza place back then! A chippy opened in Limpertsberg area of Luxembourg City around 1993/94. It was often...

Trivia: villages and towns in UK/Ireland with just one road leading into them

Canada - the one in Hampshire! If you only count metalled roads, then also Fritham in the New Forest (the part where the pub is. The outskirt has a second road, meeting the first about 3/4 mile before the pub).
