    Highland Chieftain Friday 4/9/26

    Agreed!!! :)

    Highland Chieftain Friday 4/9/26

Actually, most schools start the autumn term midweek (I imagine the thinking behind it is to allow a short week to ease everybody in especially as it's the term when new pupils start school). In Cumbria they go back on Wednesday 2nd.

    Oh OK. Makes sense.

Lumo (West Coast) - passenger experiences

I find myself strangely happy when I see a Lumo WC (no pun intended) train passing by :) . I'm seeing one most mornings at the moment as there's one goes through Clifton southbound at the point I'm returning from my morning run. One thing I don't understand- why do they start/finish at Sterling...

GWR two passengers left behind at Paddington

I hope they're watching this so they can be reassured that they're doing it right. Thank goodness Penrith is my local station. I never fail to appreciate how lovely the AWC staff are. I'd far rather depart a minute or two late than see someone be prevented from boarding the train.

ECML animals incident near Grantham 20-21/8

That's a valid point I think. I'd certainly be tempted to self-evacuate if I was within shouting distance of home. Whether I actually would or not I don't know but I'd be tempted if the circumstances warranted it.

Bus services you think are useless.

Not to mention Cranstons (best food hall in Cumbria IMO :) ) Penrith has a surprising number of useful shops. Yorkshire Trading Company for example. But then I'm biased.

    Euston Dining Club Menu 1963

I can well imagine! Wasn't that how Cornish Pasties were invented? Miner's tucker? Worked on a practical level as well as being tasty.

    Euston Dining Club Menu 1963

It would have still been the era when there would most likely have been a wife/mum at home to prepare the sarnies (and most men in particular would have expected a proper dinner in those days. My dad would have been horrified at the thought of sandwiches for lunch :) )

Oh I remember it well! One of my favourite school puddings was that.

Issue with the Overhead Wires between Peterborough and Stevenage - 16/08/26

I travelled back to Penrith from Euston yesterday early afternoon. Euston was heaving- don't think I've ever seen it so busy even at Christmas- and every northbound train was jammer due to the ECML issues. My Avanti service was declassified and there were people standing in the aisles until the...

    Britain's Most Scenic Bus routes

It's passed me a few times has the 888 and I've often wondered what it's like to travel on. The road between Alston and Penrith is fab.

Lonsdale also do a twice weekly service (106) between Kendal & Penrith via Shap. Another route with excellent views (including the Howgills, Haweswater and Shap fells and the Northern Pennines).

    Thames Clipper from Barking Riverside.

Oh I agree! Before we relocated to Cumbria a trip on the the Thames Clipper was one of our favourite days out. It's great when they really put the throttle down. :D

Help! Fined for failure to collect physical ticket!

Am I allowed to say just how much I agree with this? As I've mentioned previously, a similar thing happened to me on a TPE train from Penrith to Carlisle a year or two back. I was certain I'd purchased a mobile ticket (my default) but for some reason it was a 'collect at station' one. The train...

Trivia - Unexpected (and beneficial) station stops

Not quite the same but back in the days (early 80's) when we were students my friend and I were (very kindly) given a lift on an empty train from Paddington and dropped off at Cholsey (on a beautiful summer morning just as the sun was rising). Saved us an uncomfortable night on a bench at the...

No toilets on the train - ticket validity?

I have no disabilities but there's very little chance of me not desperately needing a wee on a two hour train journey. I'd probably make it but I'd be horribly uncomfortable by the time I left the train especially if there was no bog nearby. I'd be pretty furious if, having had to leave the...

Saddest Sights on the Railways (Trivia)

I agree with the others. You didn't fail her. Regardless of how things panned out, you (and the BTP person) may actually have given her some comfort. She at least knew someone cared.

    Incident between Crewe and Stockport?

Yes, sadly it was. I got talking to the train manager whilst we were waiting at Stockport for further instructions. Thanks all for your input. I made it back to Penrith eventually, albeit two or so hours later than planned. Nothing in comparison to what the family of the deceased person must...
