Sheffield Station is in a catastrophic state with the platforms and footbridge full of people and hardly any trains to get them into. Never seen anything like it. I assume the normal diversion from Leeds to Manchester is largely unavailable due to engineering work.

I was at Sheffield around 1530 yesterday (travelling home Leamington-Birmingham-Derby-Sheffield-Leeds on a succession of advance purchase tickets) and the station was complete chaos. Hundreds and hundreds of passengers on platforms 6-8, I had 12 minutes to connect from arriving EMR train on P7 onto the Yorkshire Flyer on P3 and only just made it, such were the numbers of people crammed into the platforms and stuck on the footbridge, which was so full of people you could barely move. I have never seen anything like it before. Staff were present but overwhelmed by the sheer numbers.

They've not sent out any internal messages about generic lifting of ticket restrictions, bar one about not encouraging customers from cancelling trains to go for 5 car services.

Edit: I asked if I could take an earlier train and the staff were brilliant about it

I travelled back to Penrith from Euston yesterday early afternoon. Euston was heaving- don't think I've ever seen it so busy even at Christmas- and every northbound train was jammer due to the ECML issues. My Avanti service was declassified and there were people standing in the aisles until the train finally emptied out a bit after Preston. We were running slow due to being overloaded and the shop couldn't open but the Avanti staff were doing all they could and there was free water (just as well as their was an aircon issue in some of the carriages).

There were no ticket checks on boarding or en route (for obvious reasons) but Avanti staff confirmed ticket acceptance was in place.

One of the big problems in disruption at Stations like Sheffield or Peterborough is the number of passengers incoming from trains and expecting to change to another service, so even if you shut access off from the street to control numbers it becomes impossible to do so.
