Expectations of graffiti being removed when reported

I love Banksy. I'm probably going to get shot down in flames for admitting it but I rather enjoy 'clever' graffiti. It can be both artistic and amusing.

    A few days in Inverness

Culloden battlefield is worth a visit. It's only a few miles outside Inverness and there's a regular (hourly if I recall) bus service.

    Your favourite stretches of road

Oh yes! Really brings back memories of when we still lived in Reading and were heading north to Cumbria for holidays. I always felt the same when we saw Didcot power station. :)

    Your favourite stretches of road

I'm very fond of the A6 as I drive it often (especially as it runs through the village). The bit from Penrith to Carlisle is nice too. Hardknott/Wrynose gives me the willies even as a passenger (much prefer to walk it than travel over it in a vehicle).

Best coffee shops on the network?

Although if you have time to leave the station the best coffee in Carlisle (IMO) is at Expresso Hub (next to the tourist information centre). Again, it's Cavetii coffee beans. :)

Best coffee shops on the network?

I agree. They use Carvetii coffee beans (a local supplier). Best coffee beans ever IMO.

    Thank you!

    What happened to Request stops?

Is Falls of Cruachan still a request stop out of interest?

What has been your longest rail replacement taxi?

Oh that's a good story! Thanks so much for following up on it. Nice one! :D

What has been your longest rail replacement taxi?

Oh yes please! I, too, would love to know what the back story was.

What has been your longest rail replacement taxi?

Perhaps he was the captain! :)

Weekday first on Crosscountry and Avanti West Coast

The Seatfrog upgrade is definitely Standard Premium based on the price. I'd go for it- saves the hassle of not knowing if a SP seat will be available on the day.

Guards not doing their job properly (and other poor experiences with staff on the railway)

Must say that with the exception of the Avanti Euston gateline staff (who seem to have permanently got out of bed on the wrong side) everyone I've encountered in recent years at least has been lovely. Perhaps I've just been lucky.

Problems near Shap summit tonight 14/2/2026

I wondered why the line was so quiet! Glad we did our Valentine's Weekend trip to Carlisle and back on Friday instead of yesterday (we went to an exhibition at Tullie in Carlisle, had lunch and a couple of drinks hence the train instead of driving). Still, at least when you're only going to...

"Britain's Favourite Railway Stations with Si King" - new series on More 4 - starts Thursday 8th Jan 2026 at 9pm

I'm enjoying it too but must admit I prefer Tim Dunn's approach. I do hope there'll be another Railway Architecture series.

You never forget things like that do you? Lovely story :)

Lesser-known tunnels which are no-longer used

A little off theme but I wonder if there's a similar site for former bridges? The one that always fascinates me is the viaduct that used to cross the Solway from Silloth to Annan. You can still see where it was- some of the supports are still in place. I like that it was used as a pedestrian...

    Up and Down directions

I can never quite get to grips with the WCML being 'Up' to London and 'Down' to Glasgow. I can see the logic but I can't think of 'down South' as being 'up'!

Oh wow! I'm going to have hours of fun with that website. :)

Validity query for Edinburgh Airport Bus/Tram

The Dalmeny House/Cramond walk is lovely! We did it with some Edinburgh-based friends a couple of years back (at this time of year too) using busses to/from Edinburgh. Hope you have a splendid time :)
