No, there have been several phases of deposit and fee.
In the very early days there was no deposit if you purchased a travelcard at the same time as the card.
The first deposit was £3 and this was later increased to £5. The deposit was refunded when the card was surrendered.
The £5 changed to...
It is possible to go beyond the valid zones on an Oyster card with a travelcard loaded on it, and when you do the PAYG extension fares will be discounted by the railcard if applicable. Therefore it is logical to want to check the railcard.
I take it you mean Senior railcard. There are only two settings for railcards on the Oyster card: Disabled (gets discounts on peak fares/caps) and National Railcard which covers everything else including Gold Cards.
The only distinction between railcards is whether it is a disabled one or not. All other railcards, including annual gold cards, simply appear as National Railcard.
I'm sorry but this wouldn't work. The terms and conditions of using contactless PAYG on National Rail state that you must touch in and out at each end of the journey. Furthermore, the maximum fare deducted at Leytonstone would not cover a journey beyond the standard zones, so an inspector...
It may have had a bus and tram discount added, or it might have had a railcard discount added. Neither of those would affect the price paid for a normal travelcard. However, any discount or travelcard added to the card prevents its use by anyone other than the registered holder. This includes...
99.99% sure it was. There was only 4 minutes between the two stations and the interaction included getting the address wrong once and taking payment, all of which adds to a process that is not that quick. The other thing to note is that the inspector didn't ask them to present their card to a...
OK, brief update to answer some questions. I have spoken to the OP on the phone - I offered if they wanted which they did. They are now a lot less stressed.
Some context. The OP is used to travelling short distances on the Underground. They have never had an onboard ticket check before so...
I fully understand that. Try not to let it stress you too much. I know that's hard.
OK, Kelvedon is the station after Witham, so can you remember if the train stopped anywhere after you had started talking to the inspectors? My recollection from witnessing a penalty fare being filled in on a...
OK. Number 1, follow the earlier advice in the thread to request the CCTV footage. There are two scenarios:
1) The footage shows that you were spoken to before the train arrived at Witham. If this is the case (and you must be truthful) then the inspector has not acted properly. I sincerely...
To be honest I wish you'd left it before you posted anything. You clearly don't know the ins and outs of contactless PAYG. Unfortunately there are a number of staff working trains where PAYG has been added recently who also don't understand fully, hence we get situations like this. On a...
I think we need to be crystal clear about exactly what happened and where on this. If a contactless card was presented within the contactless zone then it should have been checked. It's fine to ask where you were going, and on being told that it was beyond the contactless zone the correct...
Is the correct and sensible answer.
The balance can be negative while travelling as long as it is adjusted back to positive at the end of the journey. If the balance remains negative then you must top up before using the card again, even if you are only using the travelcard.
The previously...
