But if the incident is known to railway control they could tell scheduled services at that station to not open train doors. Staff on an unscheduled service would not have the benefit of that warning

Totally agree, that's why I said in this instance, I believe that authority came from on high. The second point about opening the doors without authorisation was not meant to be related to my experience but to the wider topic. Sorry if I didn't make that clear
