    OAP fares dodgers! (satire)

If that is the 09:29 VT service from Carlisle and your TM was Keith, he would say invalid, as he would tell you at length that the actual departure time was irrelevant; what matters is the timetabled departure, irrespective of any delay.

    ToD possible at Holyhead?

Ah, thanks for this. A bit more of the story: I was at Holyhead earlier this week for my return journey, and after 3 weeks cycling in Ireland, I was sitting in an almost zombie-like state within the 'access concourse', waiting for my Super Voyager ride to Crewe from platform 1 (I was very...

    FQ's trips around the globe

Agreed. Mind you, the concourse between platforms 1 and 2 looks (and smells!) like an abandoned warehouse, and I actually apologised to an American tourist on behalf of Britain...

    ToD possible at Holyhead?

Cheers for that - must have been what I saw when I first arrived, and it has been bugging me for the past week...

    ToD possible at Holyhead?

A group of American tourists told me recently that there was no TVM to collect their Virgin Trains tickets at the station, and the ticket-office staff suggested they speak to the crew regarding their tickets, yet NRE states: "Collection of pre-purchased tickets: Yes, from either ticket office or...

Next timetable update on Irish Rail?

    Ah, cheers for the info!

Next timetable update on Irish Rail?

Trying to book for Monday 22 May, website says "Timetable valid from 03/03/2017 to 04/05/2017." Anyone know when the summer timetable is released? Thanks!

Loading procedure on ATW loco-hauled services?

30907: No bars is awesome, thank you! PHILIPE: Indeed! Bevan Price: Thanks for the formation info and good point about reliability! krus_aragon: Many thanks for sharing your experience! 1D53: Good to know, cheers!

Loading procedure on ATW loco-hauled services?

This summer I am planning a return to Ireland, and during my trip planning I noticed that ATW have LHCS services from Manchester to Holyhead. A little more research revealed it to be 4 x Mark 3 coaches hauled by a '67 with a DVT. Is that correct? I note that 1D34 arrives ECS at 09:48 and...

    Irish Rail Report

Oh my! Can't believe it has gotten so bad. Would privitisation help?

First driverless truck delivery in the US

Or a bicycle and train ticket. :) But I expect the first autonomous vehicles will be part of car-sharing schemes, so no need to buy anything: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=bu0QEmyakSI#t=1706

    Pendolino the wrong way round

For me, worrying about the formation is the most stressful part of any journey I make (as described in a trip report from last year). Given that they manage only 17 stations, sending the needed info to each station should not be rocket science...

How not to be a successful fare dodger

The phrase "successful fare dodger" sounds like an oxymoron to me. :-) Is there a reason the gates are left open in the morning?

Why don't the TOCS create accounts on here?

They ought to recruit more staff so that they can recruit more staff! :-)

Any trains with front windows for passengers?

I was just searching Flickr for something completely unrelated when this image came up: Mystery train. Anyone know anything more about it? I'm not sure if it's forward or rear-facing, but it looks like a basher's wet dream regardless... :)

Can a single 153 be called a train?

Operationally speaking, a train is just something that is used to work diagrams - the railway does not care about dictionary definitions. :p

Canal boat dwellers told to keep moving

My brother is in the same boat (so to speak  ). He frequently complains about being moved and readily admits to being a 'canal gypsy' type. My own opinion is that he should pay at least something towards the upkeep of the canal, just as vehicle owners do with the road tax.

Trip report: my first SailRail to Ireland

Deep breath, big finish... Part 5: After 14 minutes of cycling, I arrived at Holyhead terminal at 16:50, which was a hive of activity. At this point, most people just want to get home, but I'm not most people: I don't want to go home, I want to go back to Ireland and do it all again...

Trip report: my first SailRail to Ireland

Part 4: Sunday 06 September 2015 I had set an alarm for 06:30 but awoke at 05:48. As breakfast was still an hour away, I drank tea in my room whilst contemplating my trip as a whole: it has all gone very smoothly - better than I could have hoped. Of course, it wasn't down to luck: a lot...

Trip report: my first SailRail to Ireland

Blindtraveler: thank you very much, and thank you to all that have given me encouraging feedback - I could not have done it otherwise! Part 4 has turned into quite a monster, and it looks like I'll have to divide it into two (yes, there will now be a part 5!) - I'll try to get part 4 up...
