I'm interested to find out more about disappearing cheap tickets, such as the withdrawal of early evening off peak tickets on eight routes by Northern last Sept.
Do you know of other TOCs removing cheap ways to travel or having plans to do this shortly?
Thanks,
Matt
This will be my final request for ideas about how passengers can save money when buying tickets with a TOC - I'm interested in learning of any good ways to save a few pounds when buying CrossCountry tickets.
I'm keen to hear about ticket splits, alternative routes, loop holes or anything else...
From a non-expert perspective, it looks like there are fewer splits available on Southeastern than elsewhere on the network.
So, I wonder whether anyone has any tips for how to save money when travelling on Southeastern.
Let me know what you would do to save when travelling on their...
I didn't see that one, no, thanks for pointing it out. Does anyone know what's going to happen with the Thameslink only fares to Brighton from London? Are they going to disappear when the super franchise kicks-in?
I'm looking to compile a list of how to save money when travelling with each TOC, hopefully specific to each TOC rather than more general savings made with railcards, advance fares and group save tickets etc
Here are a couple of examples:
Thameslink Great Northern - Cheaper London to...
Hi there,
Does anyone have any ideas about how to reduce the season ticket cost from Bishop's Stortford to London, ideally with underground zone 1 tube access too. And I'm happy to consider oyster for part of the route.
Are there any likely spots on the route to make use of a split ticket...
You're right - I work for Which? Forum members helped me out of a personal penalty fare problem I was faced with and I met some of the guys at the most recent London meet.
Thanks for this - do you know where this advice is published? Is it internal advice for TOCs?
Could you let me know what this stands for? NFM/FRPP
Thanks,
Matt
Thanks for your help with this one.
For best, I was thinking about money saved / % saved on a popular route. But this doesn't need to be too scientific.
Yorkie - Re trains which might not be too regular, I think it's fine to include them. But the more regular the trains the better.
I'm...
Absolutely right Yorkie - I'm keen to hear about walk-up tickets.
I'm writing an article on train fares and I'd like to be able to offer readers a few interesting options to get from A to B that they might not have considered and might save them a few quid.

I hope you can help me with this - I'm keen to learn about the best ticket splits in the UK? And where should passengers look for splitting points that would save them money.
I'm most interested in intercity routes, but I'd like to hear about any stand out splits that you know about.
Also...
Absolutely right, Yorkie.
I'm looking for normal tickets (rather than loophole tickets) and options that might seem obvious to those in the know, but not so to people who rarely use the railways.
Thanks for helping me to clarify.
I'm looking to compile a list of alternative routes, or cheaper but slower routes in the UK. I wonder whether you can help.
I'd like to find out alternative ways of travelling around the country which might save money, take a bit longer or might actually save you money.
These are the kind...
Thanks for this - do you know if there's a rule that states the fares need to be available for passengers to view by a certain date? So, a date that TOCs have to work towards?
I'm guessing that December 5th 2013 would be the date to look for.
Hi there,
Does anyone know when the new prices for 2014 will be available to view online?
I'm looking for a date when this will be published - all of the companies and associations who you would think would know and would be able to tell me, have told me that, "they don't know when but...
Thanks for this - what do the companies not authorised to charge penalty fares do when a passenger hasn't got a ticket and tries to buy one on the train? And do you know why some TOCs are not authorised?
Is it all of the remaining companies not listed in section 10 of the ticketing guide that...
I've found that with Northern - I was on a train from Doncaster to Manchester a few years ago. It was full of Sheffield Weds fans on their way to Stockport and regardless of the stick he was getting, the guard worked his way through and sold all of them tickets. He deserved a medal, he did a...
Hello there,
I wonder whether you can help? I'm keen to find out whether some companies are better at selling tickets to passengers on trains and whether some tend to hand out penalty fares?
I'm not certain about the intricacies of this kind of policy and whether there are any broad issues...
