If you don't get any work you can ring up after 5 hours and they'll quite often let you go home, especially if there's other spares. This is not an official policy though and isn't written down anywhere, they've been known to refuse this when industrial relations are particually bad.
1. See attactment
2. Very little overtime right now, there's been a good bit over the last year but now most people sign all the routes so its very limited, may increase slightly from December time table change.
3. A big mix, could be a Liverpool and back, could be a Scarborough and a Newcastle...
If your in the 802 link your core route will be York - Liverpool and thats what you'll be passed out over when you've done your hours with an instructor.
I think the 68 link core route is Saltburn - Manchester Airport.
Once your passed out and qualified you'll then start learning the other...
There used to be boom gates at this location, until about 5 years ago? They had a motor and a wheel and swung across the road, a bit like manual gates but made automatic. Not sure why they weren't replaced with the traditional lifting barriers.

Lower training wage,
Chance of not making it through signalling school,
Staring at a screen all day,
Less money...
You could say you enjoy having route learners with you, you enjoy keeping up to date with the latest changes to rules and procedures, you enjoy taking the time to help any new starters acclimatize to the depot. Also you enjoy doing the job to a high standard and that's something you want to pass...
Ah, I was thinking the line was going to be totally blocked north of Newcastle so I didn't fancy two diversions (Carlisle and the Scottish one) but seemingly a limited amount of LNER's can get through. Am now thinking to give the train a go and see what happens.
I'm booked on the down Chieftain tomorrow, York to Inverness. Been hoping by some miracle everything would be OK. Acceptance of a long drive is slowly dawning on me!
"Apologies Officer, on this occasion the general aura of railwayness seems to have evaded my senses as I sped through the flashing lights and lowering barriers."
"Easily done Sir, off you go."
