I recently used my Android phone to purchase a single metro/RER ticket to transfer from the Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon. The info on the forum's various posts is confusing (mainly because the process itself is confusing) and so this post describes how it worked and my understanding of the...
I’m planning a trip to Sicily and Apulia in September using a 1st Class InterRail pass. I’ve checked The Man in Seat 61’s advice on booking and reserving seats. The information out there on how far in advance reservations can be made is very vague and I’d appreciate any info on people’s...
Does anyone know for sure whether in the circumstance below there is a £10 change fee or not ?
LNER service (direct Aberdeen -> Kings Cross)
Change ticket from second class Advance to first class Advance on the same train
Ticket purchased and changed online direct with LNER
In Sept I'll be spending a few days in Montpellier, France (see map). Does anyone have recommendations for rail trips to take, especially those with nice enough views to take the family as well ?
The Intercité Aubrac from Béziers to Clermont-Ferrand looks good, but I'm not sure how best to...
In Sept I'll be spending a few days in Cassis, France (see map). Does anyone have recommendations for rail trips to take, especially those with nice enough views to take the family as well ?
We'll go along the coast towards Nice, but I'm not sure which sections are best.
Many thanks.
In Sept I'll be spending a few days in Albi, France (see map). Does anyone have recommendations for rail trips to take, especially those with nice enough views to take the family as well ?
Many thanks.
I got so fed up with Avanti's (and LNER's) handling of my Delay Reply that I made a claim against them and now have a (County) court judgement against them. They have not paid me and so I am now entitled to send bailiffs to collect the debt. Before I do that I would like to give them 7 days to...
GWR services that run non-stop from Reading to Taunton are being diverted via Bristol today. I assume that is because the B&H is more prone to expansion problems than the GWML. Does anyone know why?
Fewer micro-climate hot spots ?
Better ground stability/permanent way standards to resist...
BRFARES list two fares for Wymondham to London Terminals. One is via Norwich, one is via Cambridge. I want to go out and back by different routes using an off peak return. Can I just use the more expensive fare (via Norwich) ?
I'm assuming I can't. If I can't, does getting a excess fare...
Yesterday for most of the day trains were running slow from Castle Cary to Newbury. See below.

Anyone know why ? On the 16:41 Plymouth to Paddington it was announced...
Jago Hazzard's latest video covers the Widened Lines and mentions a Liverpool to Paris service that used to run via them. I've found a number of references to this service elsewhere. However none are absolutely clear as to whether there were any through carriages or just connections with paddle...
I'd appreciate help in understanding what freight flows there currently are to/from the Teeside area. I've quickly searched RTT and the internet , but I've attached two maps with numbers that correspond to the comments/questions below:-
Hartlepool Docks - I can't find any reference in RTT. I...
Lots of freight from the WCML(especially to Felixstowe) uses the North London Lin . The thing is that between Willesden and Camden Rd, it can take either of two routes. The first, via Primrose Hill, involves crossing the NLL and so blocking that line in both directions. The second, via Kensal...
In the current Trivia. Freight Avoiding Lines UK thread, Taunton made this interesting comment. I had never realised that Trenchard Way (opened in 2017) followed an 'avoiding line' round Taunton station. I'm assuming its main purpose was to serve the various sidings/yards in the town.
Does...
I noticed a spur on Rail Map Online and my Track Atlas in Rugby that appears to go nowhere, but appears to have track in-situ. Is it still used ? if so, for what ?
The map below shows it. Rugby station is just off the map to the right. the WCML heads north off the top of the map and the main...
Living far away, I’m interested (in a general sense) in the three lines that avoid Doncaster in a general E-W direction (see map). They are shown in green, blue and yellow.
Is the following about right ? I’d be grateful for corrections and further (general) info on the traffic over these...
Looking at Freightmaster, it seems that about 4 Intermodals a day from Felixstowe take the PBO-LEI-NUN route to the WCML and about 12 a day take the North London Line to the WCML.
Are these numbers about right (i.e. the majority by far of WCML services go via the North London Line) ?
If so...
I'm off to China on the Trans Siberian (Trans Manchurian actually) in a few weeks. Does anyone know of a source of information on locos currently used in Russia that I might see ?
The Wikipedia article for Ongar station says that "the eastern buffers remain the point from which all distances on the London Underground are measured.". Some posts on here also say the same, but give no other information.
Is it true ? If so, how does the mileage (or kilometerage) on lines...
I was looking at these units in Platform 5's UK Metro & Light Rail Systems book to see how the new units are different to the older units. It says that the B2007 have 4 motors of 130kW compared to 2 motors of 140kW for the B2K (and B92/B90).
That's nearly twice the power for units which are...
