In Sept I'll be spending a few days in Cassis, France (see map). Does anyone have recommendations for rail trips to take, especially those with nice enough views to take the family as well ?

We'll go along the coast towards Nice, but I'm not sure which sections are best.

Many thanks.

Definitely Marseille to Miramas via Martigues.

Also, if you have enough time for that, all 4 lines radiating from Veynes-Devoluy are worth a visit. But service is somewhat scarce so you would not be able to see them all in one day.

Gap, Briancon or Grenoble via Veynes are well worthwhile, but a long day’s trip. Grasse may be a fairly easy side trip. If in Nice have a look at the narrow-gauge C.F de Provence; you probably can’t fit in a trip over the whole line, but a quick trip on the Nice suburban service might be possible.

On the other side of Marseille the line via Martigues is supposed to be of some interest and on my only visit to the area I enjoyed Nimes-Le Grau-du-Roi. Admittedly, in those days my preference was for obscure diesel worked branches with a bar near the terminus.

The best of the scenery will be Cassis-Toulon and then from Boulouris to about Theoule, after which it alternates coastal and urban but is intermittently good.

I would second the Cote Bleue towards Martigues.
