Good article on the A625 HERE.
Word reached me yesterday that the last working examples of these instruments in various boxes from Kilmarnock to Holywood are to be replaced by BR “standard“ instruments in the near future, lack of spare parts being the driving factor.
Following on from this, Manchester Piccadilly had OHL at both 25kV AC and 1500 V DC. Was there anything to prevent a train being sent towards the wrong voltage?
THIS doesn‘t seem to have shown up here as yet. Looks more like a slow speed “side swipe” to me. Back to normal about six hours later.Regular service has resumed for Metro after a train derailment led to significant delays at a station in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday.
I was contacted by a former colleague this morning - he‘s in his homeland of Keith just now and wondered if any others apart from Rosarie still exist on NR? I believe Rosarie is the only one as they were basically “outlawed” post the Lockington collision and the subsequent Stott Report, but...
While researching one of the Railcar site’s mystery photos, the site owner brought this to my attention. Any idea quite how they came to get that name?
Word has reached me that the passing loop at Glenwhilly, between Barrhill and Dunragit, has been out of use for the past couple of months after damage to a set of points which NR, for whatever reason, seem unable or unwilling to repair. Presently operating as a 20-mile single-track section from...
One for those more familiar with the Wigan area that I am….
This picture shows a DMU heading out of Wallgate Station towards the Bolton/Manchester direction in 1982. However, there’s what appears to be a signal box off to the right. The boxes around Wallgate were consolidated in 1941 into the...
For the uninitiated, as Kent Walton was wont to say, this line had a unique (to BR) 1200 volt DC third rail system where the pickup shoes contacted the side of the rail. So, how did it end up with this “oddity”?
Something sticks in my mind that a while back, there was mention on here that there was a signal box which basically only continued to exist because the train describers at Preston and MP couldn’t actually communicate with one another and the box only passed descriptions between the two. Anyone...
This thread prompted me to throw this one out for discussion.
Everything I’ve seen indicates that services were withdrawn in 1975 and reinstated in 1987. A couple of pictures have popped up on Railcar showing scheduled services operating between those dates, the liveries supporting that...
Quoting @najaB from the Levenmouth thread:
“And, for completeness, the problem isn't that the UK network is old, but that it has a very restrictive structures guage. Almost any electrification project requires rebuilding bridges, reboring tunnels and/or altering buildings. That's the expensive...
Don’t know if this has been discussed before - in recent years, this line has been redoubled from Dyce-Inverurie. Insch-Kennethmont remained double when the remainder was singled in 1968 (?) - is there an argument for going back to the position then?
As we’re having a discussion on third rail, what OHL has been removed? Here’s a few starters:
Dalreoch-Balloch Central - singled (equipment reused on Lanark branch)
Craigendoran-Helensburgh Central - singled
High Street-Bridgeton Central - line closed
Balloch Central-Balloch Pier - line closed...
These early units were withdrawn after 10-15 years - the only difference from the later 101s appears to be the control system (yellow diamond rather than blue square). Could they have been converted fairly easily?
I thought we had covered this some time back, but I can’t find any reference to it.
When Annan-Gretna Junction was redoubled, a new panel went into Dumfries box to control both that section and the existing Dumfries area (I think Dumfries South may have closed at the same time). However, Annan...
Asking this one in the context of Busby-East Kilbride, which was announced as being double-tracked in conjunction with electrification and subsequently dropped. I can’t think of an instance where a never-double line has been doubled in my lifetime - can anyone come up with an example?
NR have advised that they expect to reopen the line this coming Monday following repairs to subsidence. The issue appears to have been an old culvert which nobody knew was there. Further investigations will take place to establish where it comes from and goes to.
We are aware of an issue with emails from the Forum to Microsoft-based email accounts (hotmail/outlook/live.com email addresses). This is being looked into currently, thanks for your patience meanwhile.
