Valid routes for Exeter Central to Princes Risborough?

I've been trying to make sense of the routing guide to see what the valid routes for this ticket are: https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=EXC&dest=PRR&rte=840&ldn=1&tkt=CDR The shortest route is via Taunton, but the ticket is routed via Honiton. Permitted routes Guildford to London

I have always assumed that travel is valid via Sutton. But having course to check the routing guide recently, the maps are PD and DK which does not allow travel via Sutton (unless you are on the through train that runs in the evening peak) Is this correct?

Higher fares for shorter journey (SUO->GLD)

The Anytime Day return (SDR) for Sutton London [SUO]-> Guildford [GLD] is £18.40 but the SDR for SUO-> Godalming [GOD] is £14.40. Two questions? 1) Does anything prevent me getting the cheaper (GOD) ticket and aligting/joining at GLD in both directions? 2) Why does this occur? Guessing it is...
