I wish to travel from Exeter St Davids to Guildford, with break of journey on the outward leg at Sutton (London).

Can someone tell me if this is possible on a Super Off Peak Return with route "HONITON NOT LDN" assuming I go on SWR from Exeter to Clapham, Southern from Clapham to Sutton, Southern/SWR from Sutton to Guildford and SWR from Guildford back to Exeter?

I think the ticket you want is one from Exeter St Davids to somewhere like Epsom. A ticket to Guildford permits travel via Clapham Junction - but only if you take a circuitous route to get there (via Addlestone and Feltham) - and it doesn't permit travel via Sutton. Meanwhile a ticket to Sutton doesn't allow travel via Guildford.

A ticket to Epsom, in between Sutton and Guildford, has a variety of different permitted routes. These would allow outward travel via Clapham Junction and Sutton, and return travel via Guildford and Woking. It does cost more than a ticket to either Sutton or Guildford, but I suspect it is still cheaper than buying separate tickets to cover the "off route" section on a ticket to either Guildford or Sutton, although it does depend on the exact times at which you travel.

Also note that the outward portion of a Super Off-Peak or Off-Peak Return would only be valid for one day under most circumstances. Therefore you would have to recommence your journey at Sutton the same day as you travel up from Exeter. If this isn't the case, you will have to buy a separate single to Guildford, which may work out more expensive overall.

Thank you. With an overnight break-of-journey in Sutton, with a return to Epsom, I would only need a single from Sutton to Epsom?

Would a SUPER OFFPEAK RETURN to London Terminals Route VIA HONITON be valid for the following itinerary:

Exeter St Davids to London Waterloo (Day 1)
London Victoria to Sutton (Day 1)
Sutton to Guildford (Day 2)
Guildford to Exeter St Davids (Day 2)

Assuming travel was at the correct times etc.

No.

Exeter to London is allowed "any permitted" according to mapped routes (https://data.atoc.org/routeing-maps)
  • GW
  • WE
  • GW + WE
  • WE + WC
  • GW + WX
  • WE + WX
  • LE
  • WR
  • PZ
  • WR + WX
  • PZ + WX
further constrained by this ticket to only include routes via Honiton, and none of them includes Sutton or Guildford. Tulse Hill & Streatham seem the closest points that are allowed.

Exeter-Guildford allows LE + PD which doesn’t include Sutton either but gets close.
Conversely, Exeter-Sutton doesn’t include Guildford (LE + SC).

@Watershed already said this, and an Exeter-Epsom ticket allows Guildford so gets you most of the way to/from Sutton also.

This worked well. The ticket didn't work through any of the barriers apart from at Guildford (rejected at Exeter St Davids, Clapham Junction, Sutton, and Epsom)

I am surprised that no booking sites (apart from this Forum's) offered this fare when asking for a return journey at the dates/times I travelled, giving via Honiton. Probably a lot of singles are getting sold when the returns are cheaper.
