Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

Agreed. This is so true. As someone who's worked in UK national print media in the past, the inevitable decline is far more pronounced than forecast. The simple fact that Newsprinters are about to take on the (Reach PLC's) Watford portfolio in the coming months speaks volumes about the...

Flights - what time of day?

I do 5-6 transatlantic trips a year for work, and I’ll generally do a bit of work on the way out (day flight) assuming the WiFi is working, but after a redeye back I rarely work the following day (having landed at ~6am at Heathrow and getting home at ~7:30 dependent on traffic). Maybe the...

    Beer Gardens Overlooking Railway Lines

In no particular order, four immediately spring to mind here: The Falcon in Clapham -- many moons ago I remember having a pint in there with some chums and seeing the Eurostar rumbling past above! The Fishery Inn in Hemel Hempstead (or the Beefeater across the road but that's a bit of a hole)...

    DLR B23 Stock (CAF Inneo)

That was indeed the case when I ran it back in 2019 aye.

Brunel Arcade, the old new Reading Station

Here’s the latest on the old M&S site, taken a short while ago. Completely flattened now.

Brunel Arcade, the old new Reading Station

Update on the deconstruction of the M&S store in the old arcade here (not my photo).

Most boring journeys between 2 Stations (Tunnels don’t count!!)

Leamington to Banbury has always bored me -- especially when comparing it to the rest of the route between Reading and Coventry, which has a little bit of everything!

“Extreme day trippers” on the rise

Similar story here  Back when Richard Desmond owned his newspaper and magazine empire, one of the sales reps used to fly around the globe one flight ahead of him, and placing copies of OK! Magazine in arrival airports to give him the impression that his products were globally available...

Crazy day with SWR (9 April)

Taxi reimbursement was on the table from quite early on as well. Seems to be their go-to these days when it's really bad.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

You should see the state of the bogs in the Hammersmith End at Craven Cottage -- like stepping back in time, and not in a good way!

    Interesting stuff -- thanks!

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

I can vaguely remember "Factory Fortnight" from back in those days (one set of grandparents lived in Moulton). Was that a boot and shoe factory specific thing, or more widespread I wonder?

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

On that theme, I miss footballers running out of the tunnel and heading imaginary footballs as they run onto the pitch. It's all mascots and handshakes these days (at least in the Prem)!

I see what you did there

    Make trains dry?

Agreed -- although he could have lifted the ban the following year when it started running to Hammersmith and you were forced to change at Edgware Road

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Good one aye. Also on that topic -- the relative ease of being able to drive down the road or walk along the pavement without having to squeeze by shed loads of SUVs, vans etc. Without giving away our address on t'internet  If you look on Google Streetview at some of the side streets off...

    XC Voyager Refurbishment

I'm no expert, but it's a generally a tenner from Coventry to Reading and vice versa on weekends (some TMs have charged me £12 in the past). Longer journeys would cost more, I'd imagine. I tend to pay the extra (within reason) and stick with Seatfrog at weekends as you get a seat reservation...

    XC Voyager Refurbishment

Just looked at today's formations from Coventry to Reading, and out of 17 services, only one (the 0926) is / was a double set in this neck of the woods. Anyhoo, we digress from the refurb conversation...
