Will East Midlands Trains' Meridians and HST's be replaced when the franchise is renewed?

http://archive.nr.co.uk/browse%20documents/sectional%20appendix/sectional%20appendix%20full%20pdf%20copies/london%20north%20eastern%20sectional%20appendix.pdf PDF Page 335 says that Platforms 1-4 are 260m/285yards long. It would be a tight squeeze but it looks like it could be done, just.

    Crossrail and High Speed 1

Abbey Wood station exists for the reason you describe. Instead of needing to head into London and then back out to Canary Wharf, people will get off at Abbey Wood and switch onto an Elizabeth Line train for a direct run into the city.

    Scottish Electrification updates & discussion

The idea of using bi-modes for the sake of a few short stretches of hard-to-electrify track doesn't make a whole lot of sense, despite what Chris Grayling likes to go on about. The minimum amount of engine you need for a train to be able to move any distance at all makes a significant impact to...

    Scottish Electrification updates & discussion

Ah, I misremembered the junction name. In any case, it means the idea of putting them up the Milngavie branch would be even more disruptive than I had thought.

    Scottish Electrification updates & discussion

Low passenger numbers mean the reason for electrifying Maryhill is operational convenience more than anything else. That's not to say it's an irrelevance though. When ScotRail will be trying to pour a gallon into a pint pot with the future Queen Street HL timetable, any 'quick win' which unlocks...

Transpennine Express regularly held outside Haymarket

Things might also improve when 5 and 6 open for business next year. Then it won't be necessary for full-length terminating trains from the ECML to use up platforms which could have been available for trains from the west.

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

If you replaced the HST drive motors there really wouldn't be much of the original train left! It would be lovely to have even more bits of the HSTs made new. I would love for Hitachi to resurrect the Hayabusa concept and for the ScotRail HSTs to become hybrids. I doubt anything that major is...

HS2 - good for the provinces?

If the problem is that there's not enough homes, then the only solution is to provide more homes. Mad ideas about forcing jobs or job creation to move to the provinces simply won't work. Any offices in London vacated by the Civil Service would just end up filled with other businesses, meaning no...

Trivia: Electrified lines with no electric services

I remember being on Helensburgh trains and being very surprised to go through Platforms 1 and 2 at Haymarket. When your mental model is that Platforms 1 and 2 are for Forth Bridge trains while 3 and 4 are for everywhere else, it is a bit jarring to see an exception. Presumably it doesn't confuse...

Trivia: Electrified lines with no electric services

2H04 from Helensburgh uses Platform 1 at Haymarket and then 16 at Edinburgh. Only one minute earlier a Shotts line train comes in and it can't use the Fife lines. This is just one example and I'm quite sure there are plenty of other times the wires are used.

Tesla BAMF & Technical Peak Steel on Steel Acceleration.

The ballpark figure is 1MWh, according to Tesla critics. According to this government lab factsheet, the 85kWh pack from a 2014 Model S has a mass of 545kg. With subsequent advances in pack design and battery chemistry, I think it's safe to assume a mass of 500kg for a 100kWh pack. A 1MW pack...

Tesla BAMF & Technical Peak Steel on Steel Acceleration.

The Model 3 is a new generation of vehicle rather than just a reconfigured version of the S. The Model '1' was the Tesla Roadster, which demonstrated what was possible using lithium-ion batteries in a car. The Model '2' was the Model S, which demonstrated what was possible when you designed a...

Will Euston get a HS2 Upgrade?

What? Crossrail 1 never had to serve Euston. That's what Old Oak Common is for.

Tesla BAMF & Technical Peak Steel on Steel Acceleration.

I do think a company worth dozens of billions of dollars will have done its homework before launching a product like this. The worldwide articulated lorry market is not small and there's plenty of data about what sort of trips they need to do. They're not amateurs any more. Where did you get...

Tesla BAMF & Technical Peak Steel on Steel Acceleration.

It's 100% battery electric. But, the performance figures are just what you get when you use electric traction, so long as you can supply the motors with enough juice. Since the initial post was about what the performance of a Tesla Semi-locomotive would be, my answer is that it would be just...

Tesla BAMF & Technical Peak Steel on Steel Acceleration.

What Tesla have done is made electric performance available in a truck format. Electric traction is what makes that sort of performance possible - the batteries just need to be enough to feed the peak demand. On the railways, we already know what happens when electric traction and sufficient...

Possible plans for Edinburgh Waverley station?

As I understand it, 12 is meant to be finished well before 5 and 6 in the plans. 12 will be useful pretty much immediately for the 7 and then 8 car E&G shuttle service, while 5 and 6 will only come into their own once the IEP rollout is well underway on ICEC.

Breich - Public Consultation on Station Closure

Daft idea time - build two Conon Bridge-style platforms nearer Breich village and rely on local door operation. The 385s even have the end gangways needed to make it work for multiple unit operation.

    Euston - underground - 2 stations ??

The Northern line can function as two entirely separate lines in service because of the way the junctions at Kennington and Camden Town work. The Battersea extension under construction now will make it look even stranger when complete. There's been recurrent talk of a proper split, with each...

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

It would act as a park and ride for Glasgow to some extent, but it would also give Coatbridge, Motherwell and wider North Lanarkshire a first-class connection into the Edinburgh economic zone. Eurocentral gives the best possible north-south connections by both road and rail. Jacobs are clearly...
