Lack of capacity on EMR regional services, such as Skegness and Liverpool-Norwich. What can be done?

But, of course, commuter trains are operating on a fixed route, fixed time basis, scheduled/rostered in with the other trains on that line. Your 199 days a year are spread over 50 different routes - where would you get the route and traction trained staff from for that, especially as many of...

Could a new law prevent the last train of the day being cancelled and replaced with a bus?

It think it entirely impractical to 'legislate' to force train companies to provide a train rather than alternative transport on the last train. As has already been mentioned, there are lots of reasons why they may wish/need to do this. There is already laws in place about provision of...

Trivia: Did this platform device actually exist? (Was "Is this a false memory?")

Yes, these were found at many of the larger (London Midland?) stations.

    Fichtelbergbahn

When I last made this connection (about 10 years ago) - the two trains stopped quite close to each other . You can certainly buy a ticket on the train (the intermediate stations are not staffed). I think I bought tickets in the station and the train waited until everyone who needed to had done so.

Introduction of European Entry-Exit Scheme (EES)

It is also a main purpose to check that the person presenting the passport is the same person to whom the passport is issued. Hence the biometric information, facial recognition, fingerprints.

Platform Departure Screens with Wrong Carriage Formation

Maybe because in Switzerland they have Swiss people operating the system, for (mainly) Swiss passengers, all of whom have the Swiss culture, whereas in Britain....... We are who we are.

Is Stratford upon Avon destined to remain as poorly connected as it is currently?

The scrapping of road building/improvement plans for defence may well be accepted at this point in time. I doubt very much that your inference ' and that rebuilding/new heavy rail is the only way to go to move people and freight around' is accepted at all. It certainly is unlikely that...

    Stagecoach Midlands

I think it is much more than that - an approximation is 148 takes 17 buses, the 56/57 about 11, the 48A 2, 18/19 2, 41 group 3, 74/78/735 is 5, Nuneaton town services 13 and I think possibly 15 or so on the TfWM contracts (that might be too much!). Could work it out exactly, but not enough time...

Does the bus industry have a widespread cultural problem?

I don't think it is a question of how well it is working , more of how much it is costing , and how that going to be funded going forward?

Does the bus industry have a widespread cultural problem?

If you can get a grant for an EV, this is typically for 75% of the difference between a new Diesel and an EV. Grants for infrastructure are also (when available) only 75% too. So there is still the new Diesel price + about 33% or so to find, plus 25% for the charging infra. Not...

Does the bus industry have a widespread cultural problem?

Many years ago, when I first started work, if you couldn't walk or cycle you caught the early staff bus. If you started a bit later, you caught the first or subsequent town service bus. Home by bus after your shift, or in the middle of your spreadover. Reverse in the afternoon/evening...

Log your bus dwell times here

I am guessing that you want to know how long the dwell time to board/alight passengers is at each stop on a journey? Any other time taken (for example the driver referring to their running card, or picking up a dropped pen, or waiting for scheduled departure time) is to be discounted...

Does the bus industry have a widespread cultural problem?

I am pretty sure that, if Government (local and central) had not intervened with funding, the bulk of public bus services would have died out during the 1970s and 80s. A bit like the USA really. We might well have gone the 'shared taxi' style route, eventually with mass produced minibuses, in...

Should buses (and public transport in general) be a "safety net" or a tool to cut congestion?

Of course, and every bus company has its loss leading products, be they individual journeys or complete services. But there is a limit to what they can do (especially nowadays when there are precious few profit making services), and these will be those which complement their existing network /...

Things which cause bus boarding/alighting to be slower now than 40 years ago.

They also have a different cultural and legal framework for dealing with offenders.

Why do so many local authorities want to introduce bus franchising instead of municipal operators.

Of course, your proposed service may also only carry fresh air ! Were the tendered services you saw carrying fresh air running at the same time as your proposed service taking people to work? There would be more votes for Northumberland CC representatives in a service aimed at...

Does the bus industry have a widespread cultural problem?

However, they are not anywhere near as regulated as the bus industry, particularly in regards to depots, working conditions, paying taxes, as they will all be 'self employed'. Of course, if the bus industry enjoyed such conditions, possibly it would be different, but I can't see that happening...

Why do so many local authorities want to introduce bus franchising instead of municipal operators.

Money. Which bus service, or other service that the Local Transport Authority (presumably Northumberland County) provides, would you reduce or cancel in order to provide this service? It most probably wouldn't make a profit for the subsidising Authority, which would be Northumberland...

Does the bus industry have a widespread cultural problem?

I think that the nub of the problem is that the customer expectation of service is far in excess of the amount they are prepared to pay in fares for the expectation to be met. The resulting gap has been getting larger and larger over the years. In the (relatively short) 'golden age' of buses...

Why do so many local authorities want to introduce bus franchising instead of municipal operators.

I don't think there is anything to stop a train operator to apply for an Operators Licence and run buses (outside of a Franchised area of course), aside from the Control and Financial rules of their owners, who are highly unlikely to agree to such a thing, apart from possibly as a replacement to...
