Audio/visual "next stop" announcements on buses

What would be difficult is to get drivers to do this consistently, every time, on every bus - hence the requirement for an audio system where compliance is much more likely.

    National Express Coaches Discussion

I believe National Express / Mobico has had debt issues going back to the ALSA purchase (and rail franchises) for some time. They have little assets, having sold them all over time to reduce the debt or pay out to the owners. There was little or no help from Govt. for long distance coach...

    National Express Coaches Discussion

Were National Express in a position to do that? They were not trying 'to get a foothold' - they were an existing well established Company heavily laden with debt following a leveraged sale and effects of Covid disruption, desperate to reduce that debt, not increase it. I doubt any more...

Where would the money come from to fund this expansion though?

Freight train derailment caught on live stream - Pennsylvania, USA

However, British Railways considered the fitting of buck eye couplers to passenger stock as an advancement to help keep passenger stock upright in the event of a derailment.

Freight train derailment caught on live stream - Pennsylvania, USA

And the trains were slower and there were many, many more people involved in inspecting, checking and operating the trains, but still lots of derailments. Many more wagon movements then. It wouldn't surprise me if freight car mileage in one day in the US is about equivalent to that in this...

Freight train derailment caught on live stream - Pennsylvania, USA

What I am meaning is that you need to compare apples with apples. The UK has abandoned freight service with individual rail cars being loaded and despatched, often over great distances, shunted numerous times (often 'on the fly') with the frequent possibility of stress damage, made up into...

Freight train derailment caught on live stream - Pennsylvania, USA

I think there were a lot more derailments in the UK when we had a far greater percentage of 'loose freight car railroading'. Comparing passenger operations and block load freight/containers with the type of freight railroading the US has is not comparing apples with apples.

Saturdays and Sundays should be inside the working week for drivers at all TOCs (not just some as at present)

It wouldn't be quite that high a %, because most lines have reduced or no service on Sundays, particularly on Sunday mornings. Could there be a 10% cut in the number of driver duties on weekdays and Saturdays, by selective service cuts and possibly the remaining being longer in those places...

Last bus cancelled and no help

Quite. Cancelling last buses was almost unthinkable then. Crews knew that their life would be made fairly unpleasant on subsequent nights/weeks if they were the cause, so just didn't. Even in the 80s, I worked in a North Eastern town where there was a weekly meeting with the Police on coping...

Last bus cancelled and no help

This is changing now, with the development of programs (of varying accuracy) to compare BODS tracking data with Schedules. I am sure this will be honed as experience is gained. It is really up to the tendering authority to have robust terms and conditions, and effective monitoring, to ensure...

Last bus cancelled and no help

I would suggest that, outside of the major cities, every bus on the road at night will contain a last bus to somewhere, if not last buses on multiple routes. These places will also likely only have one operator, and when and if they franchise, the franchising authority will no more likely have...

Bus services that require reversing (except in bus stations)

The 51 (Stratford-Moreton) reverses at Stretton-on-Fosse, mid journey. There are other places where buses have to reverse at the terminal (or intermediate turning point) without passengers on board such as the 1 / 2 and 51 reverse at Moreton Station and 50 at Lower Brailes.

Last bus cancelled and no help

Quite. Much of the public think that Local Authorities control the bus services; it is a difficult PR exercise to start differentiating which trips/services this re-imbursement applies to and which not. With a further complication that, in the county of my residence, this only applies to...

Last bus cancelled and no help

Did you specifically ask them for re-imbursement of a receipted taxi fare, or some other expense? There is no concept of 'compensation' in the bus industry, but you can generally get such a re-imbursement for a last bus type of failure. The other measures you suggest are simply unaffordable...

Log your bus dwell times here

I did an analysis on my commute journey last Tuesday 28th July (as attached). On the a.m. journey the driver was fastidious in waiting for all passengers to have got to their seat (not necessarily sat down), whereas in the p.m. those judged as more able bodied by the driver had to move down the...

    BARTON: buses around Stamford, Lincs

The main change from 10 years before, on 2nd February 1975, was 241 (formerly 278) Stamford-Market Harborough was curtailed at Caldecott (near the former Rockingham Station) and Service 243 (was 280 - Oakham-Stamford via Edith Weston) withdrawn, and all the Sunday services in the Stamford area...
