Avanti Class 221s to Cross Country

But increases the chances of that unit being removed at, say, Derby!

New railway lines and stations for South Yorkshire

I'm afraid feasible is a long way from practical and financially sustainable. Sheffield MPs, including Louise Haigh MP for Sheffild Heeley, promoted a bid to the Restoring your Railway Fund for the Sheaf Valley stations incliding Heeley, Millhouses, Beauchief, 4 platform Dore and new station...

No services between Sheffield and Nottingham

I agree, just a pity their publicity is disjointed. Users at Dore were unable to book to Manchester from early in December. What's going on? Examination of RTT revealed the existence of the EMR timetable on their website and linked here. I assume that was circulated to the media. Northern have...

    Hulley's of Baslow (Defunct)

We're diverging from the specifics of Hulley's into the generality of rural public transport, indeed of outer suburban public transport too. The reality is some form of public taxis could be the future, tailored to times and places. That's what many are now having to pay for rather than...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

There's plenty of flying snow in the BBC report I linked above.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

It certainly was cold and I had to leave my bike at home for a few days and walk to school. I don't think I missed a day. Here's a BBC documentary to remind us older forum members of what we experienced and overcame. Younger members brought up with central heating, double glazing and heated...

Avanti Class 221s to Cross Country

I tried that last year. Went for the 9 car and with split ticketing went to unreserved coach in 5 car unit at rear to avoid musical chairs. Too clever by half, 5 cars detached at Derby, everyone into the 4 car unit, standing throughout from there.

Midland Main Line (MML) - ideas for new links to London

Extending to Leeds is the obvious one, not least because it was done in relatively recent times. I'd often catch a morning HST going south from Chesterfield, but the reason it came from and to Leeds was primarily for overnight servicing. 4 big drawbacks, especially today. 1. Congestion north...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

I think we may still have my wife's sledge lurking long unused in the dark depths of the basement. This picture in 1965 when we had some real snow. My sledge was all wood and got wrecked after hitting a well hidden rock.

New Go-op train service between Swindon, Taunton and Weston-super-Mare approved by ORR - Access Rights now lapsed

But most probably don't realise that and won't - the same as with JustGiving. However, unlike JustGiving, there's no evidence that Crowdfunder make large profits that get paid to the US, (see article in The Times yesterday...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

It amuses me when an eastbound 6 car 185 approaches Sheffield and a warning is made that Sheffield has a short platform so customers should move forward to the first 5 coaches. (Assuming everyone knows which coach they're in.)

    Hulley's of Baslow (Defunct)

Absolutely, the ideal situation to be maintained as long as possible. Until the figures don't add up and something has to be done that's going to cause pain to who knows who. In our case those not being TUPE'd were ecstatic. Those who saw their redundancy package withdrawn fell into two camps...

    Hulley's of Baslow (Defunct)

Some time ago on a Sunday I was out on a Peak District walk with office colleagues including our senior manager. All very light hearted and great camaraderie, the aim for the day. On Monday morning we were all summoned to a series of well separated meetings. 2/3 were told they were to be TUPE'd...

Employment legislation advice and notice periods more likely if redundancies and/or TUPEs are involved.

    Hulley's of Baslow (Defunct)

Absolutely, but the fact that any employee could spill the beans means specifics are kept very tightly controlled until the last possible minute. Once news of a major event gets out it's like putting toothpaste back in the tube. No gross misconduct hearing would put it back. There's enough...

New Go-op train service between Swindon, Taunton and Weston-super-Mare approved by ORR - Access Rights now lapsed

As always definitions can be rather flexible, like "well used". The Marshlink line connects some quite substantial towns and its hourly service ensures the line is well used with good passenger numbers to match, Rye (Sussex) had 459,082 entries and exits in 2023-4, Ore had 255,436. The Little...

    Hulley's of Baslow (Defunct)

All staff at Go Coach may have had a letter, but seems Hulleys' may not yet have had a different letter? It may, or may not, be significant that Matthew Smales became Director of Operations on 7th November, moving up from General Manager. Speculation. Will the former Hulley's cream livery be...

New Go-op train service between Swindon, Taunton and Weston-super-Mare approved by ORR - Access Rights now lapsed

The issues are defining 'needs' and who pays for their satisfaction. It appears that the ORR has set financially challenging (killing?) conditions regarding improvements to level crossings. Wouldn't those same conditions apply if any other operator wished to run extra services on the same...
