Sheffield to Chesterfield disruption today 15/12/23

Curious to know how the works at Dore are implicated as trains on the Hope Valley line seem to be running OK. Only limited freight today and all running through Sheffield, none via Dore South. Whatever the issue it seems to have caused continuing chaos.

    Sheffield signalling query

Frequently Northern's xx.14 services for Manchester leave Sheffield on time and are then held to wait for TPE'S xx11.

ORR unveils station usage data between April 2022 and March 2023

Indeed. Full hourly service stopping at all stations on the Hope Valley line didn't start until December 2022. 2023-4 figures will be better.

ORR unveils station usage data between April 2022 and March 2023

Edale is an interesting station. Very few houses nearby it's numbers have been rising rapidly since Covid. Manchester is the main source. The other Hope Valley line stations are also doing well with Sheffield as the main source of incoming passengers. Grindleford's figures are down this year...

Shortest UK car number plate you've seen

X1 was issued in Northumberland and sold for over £500k about 10 years ago. Somebody has S1 and it could be worth £1m today.

    Make rail travel free

It's fairly easy to put on a few extra buses at quite short notice to cope with extra demand - but a nationwide blanket programme of free buses would run into big difficulties procuring buses, drivers, garage space, mechanics - and cash. Plus bus stop space. Free buses have been tried in some...

ORR unveils station usage data between April 2022 and March 2023

Yes, 4 miles away Sheffield is the second most popular destination from Dore & Totley with a little over half as many passengers as Manchester Piccadilly, 38 miles away in the opposite direction! There's a better commuter service that way even with the appalling levels of service seen from TPE...

    Make rail travel free

Make rail travel free? I made a return journey on Cross Country yesterday. I shopped around for cheapest prices and it was still expensive. Both trains were full and standing for sections of the journey. Without capacity to satisfy current demand how would we manage any more? Users of other...

Falsely used 16-25 railcard. investigated letter received.

I'm at something of a loss to understand how the OP can have bought discounted tickets to be used with a Railcard without noting the wording "You must carry your valid railcard with you when you travel. Failure to do so will result in the full undiscounted fare being payable." I've been waiting...

You know you’re getting older when……

Vorsprung durch Technik doesn't stretch to my 2014 Audi's Satnav! To update it the entire dashboard needs removing costing a substantial sum. I shall continue driving through fields until I replace the car.

    Hope Valley Capacity Scheme updates

It's been somewhat unfavourable weather recently for construction work with very heavy rain, snow, frost and very high winds on almost every gloomy day. Construction of the extended Dore loop/chord was supposed to have been completed over the summer months. Today's picture suggests it's going to...

You know you’re getting older when……

I know I'm getting old when my once new car's factory installed SatNav frequently objects to me motoring across fields that now have roads built across them, A14 by Huntingdon, more minor roads by Northstowe, A1(M) south of Scotch Corner, Great Yorkshire Way to Robin Hood (no longer) Airport and...

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

So it was the Mackems at the bottom of this then :s It's possibly more reliable to walk from Ilford Road to the Haymarket nowadays. I used to do that in about 35 minutes when younger.

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Am I imagining it that when the Metro first opened my father proudly told how he could catch a service from Ilford Road to Haymarket every 3 or 4 minutes, go to Marks and Spencers for a quick shop and get home again in half an hour? He thought it was brilliant. Last time I was on Tyneside it was...

Overcrowding at St. Pancras (EMR) 03/12/23

Thanks for posting that. Just after the escalators were changed, unbeknown to me, I was running to catch a train and was confronted by 2 down escalators. That critical extra minute to go back to find the 2 up escalators lost me the train. I no longer run for trains! But it certainly...

ECML South disruption - OLE down 09/12

As a car driver for many decades I can't say the road infrastructure is faring much better. Pot holes, subsidence, blocked drainage causing floods, overgrowing vegetation with road works everywhere. No wonder high wheelbase 4x4s are so popular. But yes, modern railways seem to be finding ever...

    Cancelled ticket, then fined

I'm curious to knows when and where the OP originally intended to pay for the final leg of their journey? Apparently the first two legs were splitsaves through Trainline.

Potential future uses for class 68 & Mk5 sets?

Northern say every passenger mile costs 40p in subsidy, averaged across all routes and times. Taking on an additional training need to operate and service known unreliable and expensive units for any route must be a total non starter.

Perhaps they want to avoid experiencing Merseyrail's somewhat lack lustre introduction into service of their 777s?

    EMR Class 170 updates

It would be interesting to know how well used these longer trains were. Many potential users had probably heard it was a strike day and avoided travel by rail. 1702370772 1R52 from Nottingham ran as 6 car yesterday, 11th, but started 20 minutes late and was 39 down at Liverpool. Apparently an...
