New trains for East Midlands Franchise

I know I'm being pedantic here, but 'forecast' or 'estimate' are better verbs to use, as I think a lot of people are falling into the trap of these growth figures being somehow more certain than they actually are. With or without HS2, I find these linear predictions of ever-increasing demand...

New trains for East Midlands Franchise

Maybe but the last NR enhancement plan published under CP5 showed a change in scope in that MML Upgrade Programme would not extend platforms North of Leicester. Of course that could change back again...

New trains for East Midlands Franchise

Agree the timetable is a bit of a mess. The opening of Corby and EM Parkway messed it up. The Thameslink recast in 2018 further ruined it and as above, having 5 different train variants is massively suboptimal. Plus an 803(?) On electric will probably be minutes quicker between St Pancras and...

New trains for East Midlands Franchise

Obviously subject to official confirmation this is a good step forward, and seems lower risk than the unproven Bombardier offer. I'm hoping they work pretty much out of the box. Assuming 9*26m sets? This gets you to just under 240m which is the spec for MML platforms. Will there be any...

New trains for East Midlands Franchise

The people at Abellio that think they can make the 180s reliable are probably part of the 12% of men that think they could take a point off Serena Williams in a game of tennis.. (Link to story: https://inews.co.uk/sport/tennis/serena-williams-men-point-win-yougov-poll-wimbledon-2019/ )

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

I think it's 125mph Southbound and 105 northbound (due to the platform) so an 80mph restriction would be unacceptable for journey times.

EMR (ie EMT) HSTs to be replaced by class 180s...?

Don't think many are saying "let's not be pragmatic and withdraw all non-compliant stock", I'm not. However, the 'realistic plan to compliance' is something the railway has manifestly failed to plan or deliver, and everybody just seems to have shrugged their shoulders and nobody has taken any...

EMR (ie EMT) HSTs to be replaced by class 180s...?

Think the word for all this clusterfudge is "compliantiness*". Neither EC nor MML HST coaches are fully compliant, but the EC ones may have greater compliantiness. *Ie 'compliant' and 'compliance' are pretty binary conditions - something either is or isn't compliant. The reality of the railway...

New trains for East Midlands Franchise

3 755/4 in multiple (or a 745 with 3 power packs) would give a 240m train (240m is the length NR are required to provide for in MML Upgrade) with about 6MW (7500hp) diesel power and maybe 600-700 seats depending on config. Compared to 2*5 Cl222 which is about 235m and has the same power on...

EMR (ie EMT) HSTs to be replaced by class 180s...?

What I really like from the Rail article is the idea that Abellio have been awarded the franchise but are still exploring options about what to do. I'd have thought they'd have been required to have a robust plan... OK the way I'm thinking about it is the 4 180s get you 3 standalone 5 car...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Exactly... Unless the MML upgrade scope has been changed. Based on what's set out in the last EDP update from CP5, NR are not required to provide capacity for more than 6 passenger tph North of Bedford, so they won't unless this has changed. Bedford may not see any additional stopping EMR...

£100m Proposal to redevelop Leicester (London Road)

I agree, the existing P1-4 are ~300m long so accommodating long trains is a non-issue. Two minutes with Google Earth makes me think it's feasible to add an island with 2 platforms >150m long which isn't short in the context of XC or EMR regional services

£100m Proposal to redevelop Leicester (London Road)

All of the above plus freight trains... Aggregates North-South (some, but not all goes via Melton-Corby) Containers East-West.

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Quite possibly. Network Rail has not been permitted by DfT to publish the Enhancements pipeline, of which this is presumably just one project. There's some coverage of this at the New Civil Engineer website.

    Bristol Temple Meads...new junction!

The scope of works described in the linked page has the feeling of something that's been cribbed from an Enhancements Delivery Plan http://fosbr.org.uk/ourcase#briseast

New trains for East Midlands Franchise

Do ITM have a an onsite electrolyser that's big enough? The reason for suggesting South Humberside is that the refineries there are probably flaring off quite a bit of hydrogen that could be used
  17. I

New trains for East Midlands Franchise

The only place I could think of it the EMR area that will have easy access to hydrogen is the South Bank of The Humber, which would also keep it safely away from the mainline, particularly if 180s are already planned to be spontaneously igniting on the London route Edit: Of course it's highly...

Parliamentary debate on East to West Midlands railway connectivity

If you Google the term, you'll find it mentioned in CP5 EDP updates (might need to look for this beyond NR as they've been removed). Grade separated junction at Wigston, 4-tracking to Syston and additional platforms at Leicester. I don't think there's an public domain info about if/when it might...

    Market Harborough Station Upgrade

Not sure on the civils side but non stop trains seem to be traveling at the full line speed now. Signs at the station indicate the underpass will reopen in December

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Looks like there's no XC service through Leicester on the same weekend, so suggests works between Syston-Wigston.
