    National Grid Frequency

Having to withstand the instantaneous loss of 3.2GW of generation will require changes so as not to reduce the resilience of the electricity system. And resilience from what? Nearly all loss of supply arises from failures in distribution networks. I'm not saying that a Black Start isn't...

    National Grid Frequency

As noted above, the 50Hz comes from having lots of spinning metal in (usually large) power stations turning at 3000rpm (50Hz). This is called synchronous generation. All that momentum gives the grid inertia, which in turn gives stability as demand changes One of the increasing challenges in...

West Northants Strategic Plan (Warning! Crayon risk)

This would undoubtedly be part of it, Kingsthorpe is extremely congested, so providing alternatives is with exploring. I think the strategy also talks about road building there to address this That only makes sense if the station area has workplaces within walking distance that provide enough...

West Northants Strategic Plan (Warning! Crayon risk)

So... A group of councils (Northants CC, South Northants DC, Daventry DC and Northampton Borough) have started consulting on the strategic plan. On the subject of rail, they are suggesting reopening of Northampton-Market Harborough, which seems a little bit optimistic, given how slow EWR has...

East Midlands franchise won by Abellio

But in the context of the interim fleet post-HST they will have the following train permutations Cl222: 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 car Cl180: 5, 10 car 7 different possible formations This is very different to the long term situation. This falls to 2 once the new fleet arrives My scepticism is whether...

East Midlands franchise won by Abellio

I haven't yet seen the MR article that sparked this latest discussion. Any half-decent rail journalist will well know the reliability issues of the 180s so naturally will have asked EMR specific questions about why HT have such significant issues, and what EMR will do to improve things.

Most/least successful recent large infrastructure project?

Also worth differentiating between ways that a project can fail - ill-conceived /designed projects - poorly managed or executed - Didn't deliver value expected (perhaps because a linked project wasn't done)

East Midlands franchise won by Abellio

Well EMR thinks it can run the Nottingham/Sheffield services with 33 5 car 80x units (165 carriages). I doubt it has over-ordered. This proposal is to deliver the timetable with 31 units and 163 carriages, 4 of which are not noted for their reliability and are not compatible with the rest of...

    Market Harborough Station Upgrade

According to the MML Upgrade website, trains from the North will be turned back at Market Harborough on Saturday 12th October due to engineering work further South. Well this be the first time the new crossing at Harborough will be used for this purpose?

    MML Electrification: progress updates

I think it's quite a bit more advanced than that, I'm pretty sure all 4 sidings have been laid out, including point work. Perhaps someone else can confirm?

    MML Electrification: progress updates

A couple more observations of progress 1. Wellingborough: New platform 4 construction is advancing, with concrete facings appearing 2. Kettering: There's a small chunk of platform canopy missing at the North end of P3, and it looks like work is starting to extend P3 at the South end 3. Looks...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

The main access road will be from the A6, The plans are available to download from Kettering Borough, application KET/2017/0791. What's the clearance like under the bridge? Will it be replaced to electrify? Or does that repointing (in 2016 presumably) mean that it didnt need doing?

    MML Electrification: progress updates

I think there's some early works going on now, s couple of earth movers have been working near the rail boundary to the South of the transmission tower where the substation will be connected

Large building project north of Quainton

Probably this? National Grid are diverting power lines and providing a new grid supply point for HS2 in the area https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/commonplace-customer-files/hs2inbucksandoxfordshire/QUAINTON%20INFORMATION%20LEAFLET.pdf

East Midlands franchise won by Abellio

Different people on here have estimated that around 20 trains are needed to run the 2tph each to Nottingham and Sheffield. So with 33 trains it could be about 10 5 car, 10 2*5 car and 3 spare/maintenance?

New trains for East Midlands Franchise

Apologies if this has already been posted, I didn't see it in the thread. The essence of this short piece from Rail Magazine is that EMR are still weighing up whether to keep their current HST fleet or get ex-LNER Mk3s as they come off lease, or... (See options discussed ad nauseum in previous...

Rail line in Hampshire is world's first to be powered by solar farm

You misunderstand... Onsite (rail connected) solar becomes part of the portfolio of solutions to provide traction power. What happens at night when the rest of the 13GW of solar in GB isn't generating?

Rail line in Hampshire is world's first to be powered by solar farm

The world’s first solar farm to power a railway line directly is due to plug into the track near Aldershot, paving the way for solar-powered trains. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/aug/22/rail-line-in-hampshire-is-worlds-first-to-be-powered-by-solar-farm This is the key bit: '...the...

New trains for East Midlands Franchise

How do you define 'success'? I think we can agree that Hull Trains Cl180 current performance is not close to the accepted definition of successful I think you mean: '... they will not last more than a few hours' Flippancy aside, is there any word - even gossip - about engineering...

East Midlands Railway livery and station branding

Have they done anything to the interior? Many 222s have threadbare seats, ingrained dirt and the seals on the windows are knackered leading to condensation between the panes of glass (thanks to repeated franchise extensions and no incentive to invest in the refurb these units now deserve)
